Question Protege or Protege 5?

Hi,

I have been thinking about purchasing a new car, and I have been researching various different vehicles from Hyundai to Honda to Ford. I settled on the Mazda line, specifically the Protege and/or the Protege 5.

I was seriously considering the MazdaSpeed until I found out that it has no fuel return system (therefore no raising the boost or fuel pressure if required). So after more searching, I found the Mazda Proteges.

I chose the Protege series because of the price, as well as the styling. I would like to get some feedback or ideas as to what I can do performance wise to this car. I have some car knowledge in regards to boosting performance, and I would like to hear your feedback on how well these 2 cars have responded to parts such as headers, intakes, exhaust, turbo/supercharging, and nitrous. I would also like to address suspension, styling (body kits, etc) and ICE.

If you have pictures or link to your own websites to provide ideas/inspiration/etc, those are appreciated as well. Hopefully this post makes sense, my english is not so good after 8 hours of work!

Sincerely,

Re: Protege of Protege 5

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply.

An acquaintance of mine who works at Modified Magazine, actually purchased one, and their plan was to turbocharge/nitrous feed the car and they quickly realized that it had no fuel return system. I confirmed this last night with a friend of mine.

Now, I'm fairly new to this message board, and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot and call anyone a liar.

Is there anyone out there that can confirm that the MazdaSpeed does have a fuel return system?

Thanks,

They planned on turbocharging the Mazdaspeed pro??????? The Mazdaspeed already has a turbo. You want a different one?

The 2 cars are the same exept one is a hatch and one is not. Same engine, suspenion, and etc.

If you do a search or go through the forced induction section you can find what you are looking for.

hello and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

for the answer to your questions check out the specific forums that address the areas you wish information for...the engine seciton for engine mods, and drivetrain mods...

the suspension section for that....just start reading to your hearts content.....its all there.

Sorry I meant to say they were going to raise the boost and add nitrous to it.

Anyways, my previous question still stands. Just looking for some ideas for the potential new car.

Buy a MSP.

If you decide not to, then I'd suggest the Protegé5, unless you just cant stand the stationwagon look. As the numbers may say, the Pro5 has lots more room in the back seat than the standard Pro. Plus, there is lots more cargo room. And you get the nicer headlights/front end (in my opinion).

Other then that stuff, the Pro5 and the Pro are basically the same.

Nope, the Pro sedan has more cargo room (everything in their default position). The Pro5 just allows you to haul bigger stuff when you fold down the seats.

Remember, the Pro5 is a few inches shorter than the sedan.

What does it matter if it is returnless style or not. The Ford Mustang from 99+ is returnless style and my friends as well and Saleen and Steeda don't have any problems slapping a Supercharger to it. There are ways to tune that system as well, just different. I know of a couple of people that are running Nitrous on top of an 03 Supercharged Cobra that are running well over 600HP on a returnless system.

Put it this way there are thousands of proteges and p5's out there but there are if I'm right only 2,000 mazdaspeeds, so that would make you different and just remember that they wont be making the mazdaspeeds for the rest of your life so just go out there, get one and feel the power of zoom zoom zoom.

Get a Protege sedan. 170hp isn't worth $20K in my opinion for the Mazdaspeed. I test drove the Protege 5 before getting my ES. I liked it but they weigh a little more than the sedan and it felt a little heavier to me when I drove it. So I'd go with the sedan.

Re: Protege of Protege 5

Hey,

I've just emailed my dealership about a 2003 Protege... I agree with Barry, while the MazdaSpeed is nice, the Protege sedan would probably be lighter in weight, and therefore more suited to mild to serious modification than a Protege 5 or MazdaSpeed.

Best thing to do is find a dealership that lists its inventory online and has internet prices for the cars......many do. That's how I bought mine. Instead of them laying out their prices for me, I found 2 NEW '02 ES's on their site listed for $12,900 plus taxes and tags only. I printed out the page from the web and brought it in. They had sold one but had the other....so I paid about $13,500 for my ES out the door brand new w/out a sunroof.....a steal in my opinion.
