I get about 520 kms per tank which is great if you ask me...... compared to my old '89 Tempest hehehe

I noticed a drop in my gas mileage too after the first ~7000 kms, but it's been all rite lately.....

I am getting around 559-600 km

So far I am at 1300 km on my ODO...and I am getting around 550 to 600km per tank ( 55 L ) in the 2002 ES-GT Sedan 2.0, this is with higher revved city driving, not even highway yet.

I am in Edmonton Alberta.

..

I am averaging about 23 mpg or less now. One time it was so bad that if I drove the car at 75 mph or less on the highway for 60 or so miles, the car would drink about half the gas tank. I changed the air filter and put in some octance booster, fuel system cleaner for 4 x 4 trunks. That worked it back to 23 mpg, but still can't get over 300 by the 1/4 gas tank mark. And it doesn't matter if I drive on the highway or not.

Another thing, when I start it in the morning the engine rev's up and down. And it seems to happen when there is moister in the air. I bought the car in early May, then about 2 or 3-weeks later it stated with the unstable rev. I happened from then on until right around Sept or Oct. And I think it happens more often when there is moisture on the car. And now am experiencing hard starting, three times so far that has happened.

Ok. The last tank I had in the car which was 87 I got 300 miles with less than an 1/8 tank left. Does anyone know if the 14.5 gallon it says in the book includes the reserve because if it does I am gettin very very bad mileage and this is the first time i have reached the 300 mark. I put some 93 in a few days ago and I hope it will help. If it does not I am taking it to the dealer, 20-24 mpg with half and half highway and city driving, and I didn't really push the car and it has 1500 miles on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Dustin

Bad thing about it, i was filling up with 93-octane @ Exxon and the dealer guy told me to use the lower grade and see what happens.

Hey The Man, tried the ECU resetting thing filled up with 89 and got 112 miles @ the 3/4 mark. That is good news, since I usally get 100 or much less by then.

Question should the engine make a rattling sound? It is there when u start the car in the morning and it used to go away when the engine got warmed, but it not anymore. It comes and goes and when the sound is loud the car does't accelerate or change out good.

MUST BE AWARE OF THIS...US/Canada

You have to be careful of who's MPG you are comparing too...if you work out the calculation based on US Gallons, the 55 Litre tank works out to 14.5 Gallons. If you use the Imperial ( Canada-British ) Gallon, it works out to 12.1 Gallons.

Now, if you get 550km ( 341 Miles ) on one full tank of gas...
using US gallons it works out to: 23.5 Miles/Gallon

If you get 550km ( 341 Miles ) on one full tank of gas...
using Imperial Gallons it works out to: 28 Miles/gallon

**I could be wrong...but these numbers seem to both match up with what people are getting, and there are both Americans and Canadians on this board....hmmmmmmmm...could this be???

**When the cars state 29 Miles/Gallon ( Like mine does ) they are talking IMPERIAL GALLONS, not US GALLONS.

Tell me what you think???

trip results

well... the P5 and I were on business this week and we burned a little gas so I checked the mileage.

First tank was at 304 miles, (oops, typo was corrected) 9.7 gallons went in: 31.1 MPG. This was pretty much a run on the highway for the whole time and with the cruise set to 74MPH (as checked with GPS).

Second tank at 290 miles, 10.5 galons: 27.5 MPG. This had a little city driving on it (not much) and some good cruisin' on it (cruise set at 78 w/ occasional dips up to 90 for 4 and 5 min intervals). This little car can really pull when it has to... a quick blip to 4th for the pass and then a nice cruise by in 5th... ah, that was fun!

So... it would seem that the car is getting the posted MPG average.. it has about 2900 miles on it at the moment. Since day one I have been running 93 octance (US) in it.

Between 9.7/100km (24.3MPG) and 12.1/100km(19.4MPG)

9.7/100km (24.3MPG) totally all highway.

12.1/100km(19.4MPG) all CITY with LEAD FOOT.

But if I combine CITY and HIGHWAY I am averaging 10.3/100km(22.7MPG).

THIS is what I have been averaging since new and even now using synthetic oil.

Even using K&N drop-in air filter.

Even the dealer said there was nothing wrong.

I'll try 87 again since last week had more city driving than normal. Then I'll try 91. If I get more than a 10% increase in fuel economy, 91 will be more economical. Usually, after about 280-300 miles I put in 12-12.5 gallons. That's about 80% highway. 22-25 mpg, way too low.

Wow. There seems to be a wide range of MPGs. I guess it all depends on everybodys driving style. I get 30MPG hwy and around 27 city using 87 octane. Even if I'm really pushing it it doesn't get less than 25mpg. All I've done is remove airbox silencer and put synthetic oil. I'll try the 92 octane in my next fill up and see if it will make a difference.

CHUCK

9.7/100 Km is more like 28-29 MPG

9.7 L = 2.13 British Gallons
100km = 62.14 Miles

62.14 / 2.13 = 29 MPG

Damn!

Okay I finally got it through my thick skull.

The CDN tank must be smaller than the US one!.

US = 15.5gallons as listed on the mazdausa.com

CDN = 55L as listed on mazda.ca

55L = 12.3 US gallons, not 15.5. Am I write or just mislead.

Okay so I am getting like 26MPG in the city. I can live with that.

I think you are mislead. First off the US tank holds 14.5 gallons. 55L in US gallons is equal to 14.5 however 55L in canadian gallons is around 12.1 All I know is that my mpg sucks and I have to figure out why. I have a full tank of 93 in there now and hopefully it will help.

no... sorry.

1 US gallon = 3.79L
1 imperial gallon = 4.54L

55L = 14.5g (US) = 12.1g (imperial)

so, 55L tank on a Mazda P5 (as staded on the Mazda Canada web site) does indeed equal the 14.5 US gallon (as per the Mazda USA web site) tank.

I am pretty sure that none of the numbers we have been talking about on the board should be using imperial gallons (sorry if I am missing someone).

As an example an all highway part of a trip I took appears to have consumed 9.7 gallons US for 304 miles traveled, that works out to 31MPG (as advertised on the US window sticker of my P5).

Working things out, if you want to convert km/L to MPG (US) you just take

km/L * 2.37 = MPG

I think, someone might want to check that
