Dunno, Pete. Looks short to me, but are you driving an auto or a manual? How much city driving--stop 'n' go? Most of my driving is non-stop to and from work 60 miles a day, plus short hauls around the 'hood, etc.--probably 80% or more of mileage is 65 or above.

My car is 2002 MP5 auto I travel from my home back to the airport(cause I'm a pilot) and back home and its exactly 30miles, 15 going to the airport and 15 coming back. between the drive there is some stop and go traffic but not much. SO thats why I'm wondering if my car is good on fuel or is there a problem. Again, I'm usally getting around +/-150 miles on the half a gallon mark.

The main reason that I'm so consern about fuel consumtion is to see if I'm getting the right amount of fuel burned or is there a problem with my car.

I just recently switched to 87 octain from 93 and the car vibrates a little now. I changed the oil and I still feel the vibs with the low 87octain. If this vibration keeps on then I'm going to change to 89oct and see from there.
Anyone please W/B. thanks...

Notice you have an automatic. You can figure a loss of 15-20% in mileage compared to a manual with a slushpump, depending on driving conditions--stop 'n' go--speed, etc.

Still can't figure why your mileage is so low. What's your average per tank figuring a 14.5 gallon fillup? A little more considering the filler neck...

I'm going to see if I can fill her up utill she can't take no more. The most I put in it with the low ocatin is 11.7 gallons I never let the needle get past the last line. But this time I'll try to see if I can pass it just alittle and then I'll fill her up.
How many gallons can she hold?

According to the literature, the capacity is 14.53 gallons (55 liters) as gino has stated.

i put it 14.5 gallons when I am at about 340-360 miles. I am constantly on highway or at highway speeds on the road and I DRIVE the car. I expected better fuel mileage myself but oh well.

Pete,
I have an '02 Auto/ ES and I to have had questions about the gas mileage. I have been a Honda driver for years and was used to getting around 30+.

I bought is off used lot with 12k miles on it. the car sat for at least 2 months with minimal driving. for the first couple tanks I was getting around 19-22 (hiway). I was royally pissed. I replaced the air filter with a K&N, changed plugs and am now getting in the 24-28 range. long Road trips, I can get close to 30.
the best and most reliable way to figure out your gas mileage is to start with a full tank of gas (right to the gas cap) and 0 on the trip odometer.
Drive normally until you are on "E" or close to it.
fill the tank up (again right to the cap), record the gallons filled.
then divide the miles on the odometer by the gallons filled.
do this for at least 3 tank fills.
figure the average of three, this will be a good idea of what your mileage is.

I drive about 80 round trip for work, and I am getting on average about 26 mpg. Not what I expected but better than my 02 Explorer.

High octain

I Have a 02 ES GT 2.0 5speed no mods (yet) Iam getting 600-700 Kilometers to a tank this is a mix of city and highway driving hard I run 89 oct You will find it will run better on higher Oct. better acceleration smother idle. I also run lucas oils fuel treatment the car runs so much better its cheep 16.00 CND for about a quart and you only need a couple ounces per tank.

If you look up the official gas milage from the manufacturer, the highway milage is exactly the same as a 2.8 V6 manual Golf/Jetta and the same as a 3.0 V6 automatic Accord.

Mazda fucked up on the gear ratios. The car revs eay too high at cruising speeds on the highway.

Miki, Pete, Myk, et al--

I mentioned earlier I was looking at 278.9 with a half tank left following a road trip to New Mexico and back from Denver. I ended up with 447.8 miles on the clock when I filled the tank--
13.78 gallons.

That's 32.5 mpg. Don't know about current tank; running 230 miles with more than a half tank left. We'll see what happens.

Myk--agree with you that Mazda screwed the pup, but only insofar that they should have added a 6th gear, rather than changing the ratios as they stand. In my opinion, they're spaced perfectly to get the best out of the stock 2.0L, but a 6th gear would bring crusing revs down about 400-450 rpm. Seeing 3650-3700 at 85 is better than 4100+.

32.6 mpg last tank. A bit more than half was highway miles, some "spirited" driving. Less idleing , it's been warmer here lately. If it keeps this up I'll be happy. Yea the 6th gear would improve gas mileage and make road trips more tolerable.

Talking 250 K

I just looked on my way home and I am at 250 kilometers at 1/4 tank That is about 150 miles. Now the top half is bigger then the bottom half.
