Ok, I'm lazy Engine Models

are the 1.6l from 2000 proteges the same as the 1.6l engines in miata and if thats true then wouldn't alot of the parts be compatable

The blocks are similar but you have to have different mounting points and stuff like that when you switch between front and rear wheel drive. The blocks are similar but thats about it. It is definitely not going to easily cram inside a Protege (though I wonder if anyone has ever tried converting a pro to RWD?). Somebody want to try and cram a miata motor under the hood in its traditional north south layout? Custom fab a driveshaft and differential? Sounds kind of fun. I don't have the dinero.
