Yes, oil does change with time, that is the nature of oil, the reaction of high temps and the gasses put off by combustion. That does not mean that you need to change it. It looks like I'm going to have to try to dig up some old links I had of a bunch of current studies on oil change intervals.
This will, of course, be debated forever. I say that if you go by the book, your car will run just fine.
If you REALLY want to know when you should change your oil. At your next change, get a sample and have it analyzed (sp?). That will tell you exactly the condition of your oil and whether it actually needed to be changed.

Every 5000 miles is good. Just make sure that you check your oil and make sure it is full. I have always changed my oil at 5000 miles expect for when I owned my saab 900 turbo which you could not go over 3000 miles becasue the oil cooled the turbo bearings and that would be an expensive repair if you fried the turbo. I usually did not go over 2500 miles with the saab. All other cars it is around 5000k.
As long as the oil is topped off 5000 miles will be fine pretty much for all kinds of driving cinditions.

change oil based on
your driving habits. If you track the car then do it more if you drive it less then average then go do it every 4 months. Porsche says to use Mobil 1 but every 15000 miles. The car manufacturers usually do a lot of testing on this and they know better then we do, hopefully.

If any of you guys and gals are concerned and wondering about the effects of the oil after 5000kms and closer to MANUFACTURERS spec. 8000km interval then send your oil away and get it checked. I have heard some disturbing posts saying that there are still people that change there oil when it gets dark. That is just 1 very small indication that oil is STARTING to change. The cleaners and lubricating properties in oil are still the biggest factors. I garantee that if you follow the 8000km interval and the TIME restriction in months that you will be fine. My Focus 2000 SE and Protege 2001 SE are both on this 8000km interval and are fine.~50000kms with this interval in place. I'll be the first to let ya'll know if this causes any long term problem.
