(Noise vibration and harshness, for those who don't know)

So, I discovered, after months of ownership, that the crossbars for the roof rack were installed backwards. I reinstalled them correctly (notch facing forward) and I'm not sure, but I think there may be a little less wind noise now.

Impossible to tell, really, because of the fartcan growl of the MS axleback and the drone of the Dunlop FM901s (which I will eventually replace).

Which leads me to this: Sound deadening. I'm thinking about installing some sound damping mats in the car. Has anyone done this? I'm thinking about putting asphalt mats in the foot wells, underneath the rear seats and in the hatch area, and neoprene sheets between the doors and interior trim panels. My car is so loud, I can't listen to the radio at normal volume even around town.

Any self-respecting ricer would just add more stereo equipment.

(j/k btw)

I've heard a lot of people complain about the MS Axleback being pretty annoying at cruising speeds. Maybe you should just invest in a different exhaust.

I put a little V2 back there(it's pretty much the same as Dynamat Xtreme), and it really killed the droning of my MS exhaust. If the exhaust is bugging you, it's money well spent.

You'll still hear it, but the dynamat really helps to muffle it.


Also, a Mazda factory wind-blocker for the sunroof will make a nice difference, too.

my friend talked to some local installers for quotes and such. one installer recommended against sound dampening under the seats because it takes about a days work to remove the seats and apply the material, and about another days work to put everything back the way it was.

one popular method is to spray the liquid dampener (pretty much liquid tar) under the wheel wells to reduce road noise. less work and you can hear the results after it dries. if you dampen the entire bottom of the trunk it should help with the exhaust noise. i replaced my stock tires with some falken ziex and it reduced road noise by a non-scientific guess of roughly 10%. i overheard a mech'c at a tire shop say that tires with a big groove down the middle of the tread pattern helps reduce road noise (in addition to better wet traction) because noise travels from the outside of the tire inward.
