Noises in the rear.

Hi folks,
I was hoping someone might be able to figure this out.
Our 2000 Mazda Protege has been making odd noises: during deceleration or braking, a faint creaking sound emanates from the rear of the car like the sound of soup cans tossing around the trunk (the trunk is empty).

The noises have been persistent for about a couple of weeks. Meanwhile we've had stretches of wet and dry weather. I haven't been driving on rough terrain lately (but we have driven on bumpy grassy fields in the past). The car is driven mostly on highways about an hour at a time and is stored in a garage overnight.

Maybe you two might need to clean or inspect your wheel bearings, and apply new grease. Its not hard to do, just unsure if our mazda's have the bearings pressed at a auto shop or parts dealer too like other cars. Sounds like something I need to check out since mines a 1999, but it is garaged temporarily till get license back or sr22 insurance...
