No clearcoat on Red and Yellow?

Some people on the Edmunds P5 forum are saying that the Red and Yellow P5 has no clearcoat on it. The reason being is that clearcoat when dry has a yellow tint that makes the red look orange, im not sure what it does to the yellow.

This sounds bogus to me, anyone can confirm this??

Wouldn't surprise me. My Mom's Black 2000 Lexus RX300 has no clearcoat. (Yep, on a LEXUS!) Black was the only color that didn't come with a clearcoat that year, why I'm not sure. I highly doubt that Mazda would skimp on a clearcoat. And if they did, they'd cut it on Red and White - the two free colors.

Maxx Mazda, in the U.S., all the colors are the same list price.

True, but here in Canada, we are charged for any color other than Red or White.

Also, we can't get the high-polished rims, DRL's and ABS come standard, our cars don't have roof-racks (Yea! ) and we can't get side airbags, leather, or the SportMatic transmission.

Are you sure the paint isn't a combination basecoat/clearcoat? My 02 Altima is that formulation and it's their color is called Super Black...

Basecoat/clearcoat apparently adds some kind of protectant to the paint while being applied....

Not sure on the yellow, but the red has a clear over it, per the paint code and I tested it with polish...

So if my car doesnt have a clearcoat, what exactly am I missing out on? Will my paint last as long? Should I do something now to have added protection? Any tips and suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance

Can anyone confirm this with Mazda headquartes in the US?

I called my dealer and they said Yellow does have clear coat.
I'm trying Mazda Canada headquarters but they seem to be on lunch or something. (long wait time)

Take a white cloth and put some car polish on it. Rub it against the paint on small area. If cloth got colored-you have no clear coat. If its' clean or grayish dirty-you have clearcoat.
I am 100% sure that red PR5 is clearcoated.

Just got through to Mazda Canada they said yes Yellow has clearcoat.

But I'm going to try the polish on the rag trick when I get home.

My moto don't trust anything 100% unless you see/do it for yourself. Even then be skeptical.

The dealer wants $129 to clearcoat the whole car, seems rather low for all the taping off they'd have to do.

The dealer is probably trying to sell you "paint protector" and there just trying to convince you by calling it clear coat.

I don't know??

Dear XXXXX,

Thank you for contacting Mazda North American Operations. I appreciate
the opportunity to respond to you.

You've inquired if your 2002 Mazda Protegé5 in Vivid Yellow has a
clearcoat. I have verified with our Product Support Engineers that the
Vivid Yellow paint on the Protegé5 does, in fact, have a clearcoat.

I hope this information is helpful.

Again, thank you for contacting Mazda. It has been my pleasure to
assist you. If for any reason this response has not completely
satisfied you, please feel free to reply to this message. You may also
contact our Customer Assistance Center toll-free at 1-800-222-5500.

Message Body: I have a Vivid Yellow Protege 5, and I have been told
that the paint DOES NOT have a clearcoat on it. Is it true that the Red
and Vivid Yellow Protege 5 has no clearcoat? Without a clearcoat,
wouldn’t the car have no paint protection? If it doesn’t have a
clearcoat,
why not? Can you please verify this information. Thank you.
