From what i have read so far i think the se is a Canadian model (which would make sense since I'm in Canada) and it's a 1.6L. It has 103hp and 9? flbs of tq (Please correct and of this) I'm reading conflicting information about the production years for this gen. This forum has 1999-2003.5 but I have read 1999-2000. Was there just a facia upgrade or something and the chasis is still the same?
This is to be my girlfriends commuter car (19min each way not too bad). What type of problems would or could I expect from this car. Does it have a timing belt or chain and when does it need to be replaced? Just a finger (not that finger) in the general direction of where to find all the info I'll need would appreciated!

 

It has a timing belt, which should be changed at 60K miles under harsh conditions, 105K miles otherwise. I was able to download the owners manual, which lists all the recommended maintenance, from MazdaUSA--I assume the same would be true for CA. Don't know about the power/fascia, sorry.

Third-Gen Proteges were produced 1999 through 2003. Whatever you've read may be referring only to the 1.6L engine.
