I love my Protegé5. It is a great car with superb handling adn amazing versatility, but please allow me to vent.

The Protegé5 is just that, a Protegé5... not an MP5. If it was an MP5 then it would have all the performance goodies from the MP3. It doesn't. The Protegé5 is a wagon version of the ES sedan, nothing more.

The "MP" designation stands for "Mazda Performance" and will be applied to many cars in the lineup in future model years. It does NOT apply to the current Protegé5!! It just drives me nuts to hear so many people call it the MP5 when it isn't. To me, that is the equivilent of calling a Civic EX a "Type-R" or reffering to a Neon R/T as an "ACR." No, no, no!

OK, I've vented now, I feel better

I just always thought of mp5 as a short way of saying "Mazda Protege 5" who wants a car named after a multimedia file??!

"The "MP" designation stands for "Mazda Performance"?????

as far as I know the MP is short for nothing MP3 is "MP3 is short for MPEG Audio Layer 3. MPEG refers to the Moving Pictures Experts Group"

its not the mazda performance 3..

we all talked about this before
seems a 50/50 split..I personally dont see anything wrong with refering the Protege5 as P5/MP5 whatever..I'm not gonna slap a set of mp5 decals on my car but i'm pretty sure people know what were talking about when we say Mp5..

Is it that much of a big deal...no..
lets leave it at that

ok, else where in the world, mazda is starting to designate concept cars under the MPS devision. (like BMW-M and AMG) in that arena, MPS standas for Mazda Performance Series. since the MP3 is a little shy of the requirements for that devision, they labled it the MP3 to follow suit with the radio they installed into it.

so, mazda is marketing a MPS Roadster and a MPS 626 which are quite interesting cars! the roadster is a miata with a 2.0 liter 200 hp engine, and the 626 never made it past concept.

SO, the MP5 never existed, and to call your Protege5 an MP5 is WRONG!

of course, all of the above is the sole opinion of the writer and should not be taken seriously.

here we go again

So..If I wanted to call my car "the little red wagon" would that be WRONG? as you put it...

Is calling a Chevolet a Chev Wrong
or a corvette a vette? some might think your talking about a chevette?

I take offensive to acura....its just a upscale honda with a namebadge for north america..

anyway....I'll agree that Mazda didnt name the car mp5....but if we want to shorten it up and call it that or refer to it from time to time as that or P5 ...who cares....

You beat me to it! That is exactly it. You can even take it one step further... most Mazda fans know that the "MP3" is the tunar-tweeked, top of the line, performance Protege right? So calling the Pro5 an "MP5" seems to imply that the Pro5 is the mechanical equivilent of the MP3, only with 5-doors. It's not.

THAT'S the source of my pet-peeve.

So to the people getting their undies all in a bunch.. relax! I'm not calling for a jihad, I'm just pointing out MY personal pet peeve! No biggie so don't go getting offended. I thought the big, bouncing, blue happy face would convey my tone in the first post but obviously some people are sensitive.
