Yo ZZH can you tell us when you put in the K&N filter again? Just looking at your chart you can guess where you put it in, but it'd be nice to have a firm date to put the numbers up against. Thanks!

Um, there's a more basic and more signicant reasone for gas mileage being better in the summer. It simply takes more gas to warm up a cold(er) engine in the winter... on the other hand, if you use the A/C a lot in the summer, of course this reduces gas mileage. So there are many factors at work , and getting a meaningful comparison from one tank to the next is difficult.
It takes more gas to warm up your engine? Sorry, I don't quite get how that works. Most fuel injected engines have a fast idle setting to help warm up the car when it's not moving, but once you get up to speed, it does nothing. Your telling me your car throws more gas into the engine at highway speeds to help "warm it up". Sorry, I don't buy it.

Although I did hear one person blame it on air density. Which I suppose could have a moderate effect.

Well. maybe my explanation could have been better. Do you agree a cold engine consumes more fuel than one at operating temperature, everything else being equal? In the winter, the engine (for example) may take 15 minutes to get warmed up, versus maybe 5 minutes in the summer. Cold engine = reduced gas mileage. Of course this effect is more pronounced on shorter trips.

Unfortunately I am not completely up to snuff on how fuel injection deals with the engine when the coolant is cold. However I doubt that it is adding more fuel to compensate, that would probably cool the engine down. The extra gas would rob heat from the engine to vapourize. Lean engines tend to run hot. So no I don't agree that a cold engine consumes more gas. It may not run as strong as the gas doesn't vapourize as well, but I don't think the ecu is adding more gas. My motorcycle is a perfect example. It has manual choke, I use it for 5 seconds when I start the bike after that the thing puts the same amount of gas to the engine no matter what the temp. I see the exact same drops in milage in my bike as my car. It is due to the volume correction at the pumps. Not the car messing with fuel additions.
At least that is what I believe.

i used to work in the gasoline retail market and yes, gas milage does decrease in winter months due to the pumps. i found this out by talking to the tanker drivers who filled the pumps up for us. it also has to do w/ gov't regulations concerning the fuel mixture for winter months.

and although i might have the following backwards, i believe that they said that the changover in fuel mixture composition occurs on or around 1 june. and this is one reason why gas prices increase. its what they called a "fake shortage".

I just put in a K&N drop-in filter tonight! I'm not sure if there's been any change though. I just filled up about an hour before I put the filter in, so I'm not sure if the throttle response is better, or if it's due to fuel pressure boost (or whatever it's called).

I didn't really notice any different engine sound though.....It may sound less like it's gasping for air....or it could just be placebo effect going on in my brain. LOL!

I'm gonna try to do up a chart like you Hank....see if my mileage (kilometerage, I guess) improves.
