just did oil change - question...

Ok, I just hit 9000 miles on Friday morning. So today, I did an oil change. I do the 3000 miles thing. Well, as usual after 3000 miles the oil was pure black. But anyway, my question is... my manual says my engine holds 2.9 US qt's. I don't have an oil container, so I just put the used oil back in the qt bottles after I've used them, and after putting the old oil in, it came about to about 2.1 qt's. Is it normal for my car to be using oil like that after 3000 miles? Almost a qt.

You have to remember that the oil filter has oil left in it. So that would be my guess as to where the rest of the oil went to.

I held the oil filter upside down above the bucket i was putting my oil in to drain it so I didn't spill it anywhere. So I got most of the oil out of it.
