Exclamation I want to revamp my car

Hey....I'm pretty new to the sportier side of cars....but have had an extreme interest in trying to go for a more racier version of my car.....I was wondering if anyone can give me any tips as to how to begin working on it....I've got a 2000 Mazda Protege DX model with a 1.6 16valve DOHC engine.........5speed....But like I said if anyone can help me out with just some info it would be much appreciated......

uhh.. the FS-ZE engine can't swap into a 1.6L based 3rd gen, directly at least, because the engine mounts are diff. and the ECU would have a VERY hard time adjusting.

the Z series engine is different than the F series engine, I could take a pic from the 99 factory service manual and show you what wont work.. the Z series has like an extra little support crossmember that would block F series engine installs..

otherwise I'd have an FS-ZE in by now

for your DX all I can say is unfortunately the performance stuff made for the 1.6 liter cars is minimal.. you could get an injen intake but they usually don't work too well on the 1.6's.. I had one in my car in July 2001.. unless they revised the design since then (mine was one of the first couple made) and it gave me a weird hesitation/bog around 3000rpm that only cleared up when the RPMS went up high, and eventually a check engine light came on. (and yes, I installed it correctly).. I guess the car's ECU wasn't too happy with the large amount of air it was taking in (shrugs)

get yourself an exhaust! just keep in mind it wont make your car (much) faster.. I got the bosal federal version collector back exhaust and it's AWESOME

you can get aftermarket uh.. clear corners, mirrors, tail lights..

it ends about there with the 1.6

I'm waiting until there's a lightened flywheel/clutch package available for the 2000DX and I'll probably go ahead and get it.. check out http://www.srmotorsports.com and they'll eventually list the stuff for 1.6

Whatever you do, good luck! just keep in mind only suspension and body parts are interchangable between the 3rd generation proteges (99-02), you can't use any 1.8L/2.0L parts on your 1.6L car..
