highway road noise

Ok.. I need to kill some highway road noise in my P5.

And before one of you tell me i should be running on 14" tires, I rather live with the noise...

Ok guys...I made some search...

dynamat seem a little bit too expensive...

http://www.b-quiet.com/

totaly loss now...

wich is better? a "dampers"? "absorbers"? "composites"?

Most of the Dynamat-knock-off products are pretty good, from what I've heard. Dynamat is crazy expensive, but some people swear by it. One of the factors is the adhesive. But I know that B-Quiet and Brown Bread are just as good as Dynamat if applied correctly.

Have fun - sound deadening is a labor intensive project if done thoroughly.

I'm sure if you did research into different tires you might be able to quiet down the road noise a noticable amount. Sorry, but i have no clue as to which tires to look into :P

Yeah, tire is an idea...but since my stock tires are still "new", i think I will keep them for awhile...and I used a set of winter tires too.

Well, I guess I should start thinking installing all the b-quiet myself

I'm so lame.

A note on tires:

As a general rule, higher performance tires are noisier. If you try to find a tire that'll be quieter, you'll almost surely suffer some reduction in handling and road feel.

There might be a good compromise out there, but this is the general way it goes with tires.

I've got 100 sq ft of b-quiet extreme on the way. It should be here tomorrow, so it should be a good project for this weekend hopefully. I'll let you know my thoughts when I'm done.

Please, give me feedback on installation and all the rest.

I'm thinking of ordering the 50 sq ft b-quiet extreme too....

for me, i think I will just do the trunk....and make some "floor" carpet.

Because I'm not smart enough to take all the inside of the car out and put some sound deadening all the way.

I'll definitely give everyone an update when I get done, I plan on doing 2 layers from the firewall all the way to the back of the trunk. I've currently got about 36 ft. of Dynamat extreme in my extracab Ranger, along with Stinger's sound mat stuff, and it did a pretty good job, but not quite as well as I would have liked. I should have done two layers in there, but I went up the sides and back, as well as the doors when I ran out of material, and I had already spent enough money at the time. We'll hope for the best this time though...

"Stinger's sound mat stuff"

what is it? is it a kind of a "mat" wich you cover with your rubber mat?

It's about 1/2" thick, it has a layer of spongy-type insulation, with a layer of rubber mat on top, and its really heavy! I'd say its close to 1 lb/ft, and you lay it down under the carpet on top of the dynamat. Its very similar to the stuff used from the factory in BMW's and Mercedes, I work on them all day long, and they have a lot of this stuff in there, along with some of the thickest foam carpet backing you've ever seen.

Window tint

I noticed a BIG difference in road noise just getting my windows tinted. The car isn't Mercedes quiet, but it was the first thing I noticed since I drive 45 min on the Interstate to work every day. Mostly it took the edge off of the crazy howl from the driver's side rear window.

That, friend, is the most far-fetched thing I think I have ever heard.

Is your tint like 1/8" thick or something?

No, I SWEAR!! But like I said, it just took the edge off the noise from the left rear window. It's not like the car is super-ultra quiet now, it's just a bit less noisy. I realize it does sound like BS, but like I said it was noticeable to me at 80mph for 45 minutes.

Sorry, but uh....

The only thing I can think of is that one of the window moldings wasn't sealing right, or was caught in the window channel, and when the installer was cutting out the tint he noticed this, and fixed it for you.

Really, window film is NOT going to make a difference that even a super-accurate decibel meter could probably pick up. Slap some Dynamat on the windows and maybe then you'll notice a difference.
