.

I did an HID conversion on my p5. The light output is excellent and if the light is aimed properly it doesn't glare other drivers.
I would say the light output is 3x better than stock now and the color is pure white (6000K). The cheap blue bulbs can imitate the colour somewhat but not the light output. Also it runs at 35w, so there is no heat issue.
Just make sure you use D2R H7 conversion bulbs and get a good brand such as Phillips ballasts & ignitors. Another good option is to use OEM Ballast such as the one off of a E46 which is made by Bosche.
Go to this site for help on HID's, it helped me a lot.

by the way Phillips makes the ballasts for Audi

www.autolamps-online.com sells the phillips kit, however with all HID conversion kits they are not street legal

Took approx 1 hour to install. The kit I used before my front end accident was a E46 conversion(Bosche B&I) with 6000K SIJ bulbs, after my insurance covered some of the costs of the equipment and I purchased a plug and play kit call Visions H7. With the plug and play kit, it is easy to install and no cutting or splicing. With the retro I did before I just had to get the male-->female connectors cause most OEM kits consist of 9006 adapters. Just have to go to you local car parts store to get these adapters and there you go.
Go with the HID kits if you don't know what you are doing, but it costs an arm and a leg!
Go with the retro conversions if you want to save atleast 50 - 60% in costs, but you better know what to buy and install! Ebay is a great place to start.

Nightowl, I remember asking you about your bulbs, thought you had HID! hahaha...

Yeah, HID retro's are illegal, but I had them for 4 monthes and no problems, just as long as they are aimed properly and it doesn't have colours.
