Good by sweet protege, Hello WRX
Well guys, after 55,000 nice miles in my 2001 ES protege I traded it in. I got so sick of getting stuck in the snow here in detroit.
my old protege
Now I'm driving a 2002 WRX Wagon. SO freaking fast. But it doesn't handle as well as a protege.
the new WRX
Good bye guys, enjoy your lives in the slow lane.

it's such a different car
I'm not bashing Protege's I loved mine. The protege has a sort-of-weightlessness about it's feel that is so rare these days in production cars. Protege's may not be fast but they are fun to drive. I wish there was an AWD version of the mazdaspeed, I would have gotten that.
I will say one thing for the WRX though, once you are in a turn hot, and you pour on the gas, finding yourself in a controlled 4-wheel drift is better than any drug money can buy!

WRX's are alot of fun. I work at a Mazda/Subaru dealership in columbus so I get to drive both of them. It'd be nice to have a subaru, but I just couldn't afford it. The STI is pretty nice though. Definatly the smothest shifting subaru available. Tons of power too. But, I ended up getting my 2003 protege es for less than $200/month, so I'll use that extra money to make my protege faster.

Experiencing WRX envy. That would have been my first choice if I had a few more bills to throw down. The Pro5 handles better according to most reviews I've read. A bit better time in the slalam too. I figured on adding a turbo kit when the bank account says I can. Just my 2 cents. Otherwise man enjoy. My buddy has a WRX and loves it. He's saving up for a STi though.

Not bashing the wrx but, plain an simple.... I don't like 'em. I used to detail cars an I detailed many suburus in my day and for one thing the carpet they use (although it may have changed since 2ys ago) I found is a bitch to clean. Even the soap from a steam Vac takes too long to come out. Well, carpet aside, I really don't like the styling of them either. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate them. Its not like I'm gonna disrespect a dude cuz he has one. Just like the protege sedan, the WRX is just for not me. I would have got one if I wanted, and it WAS on my list of car to look at before I bought the P5. I'm not to worried about speed, for a turbo was always in mind in the near future. AWD would have been handy though. I wish the U.S spec proteges had that option.

I just about died yesterday at work. I got to gas up a STI. Good grief, talk about fast. I was holding on for dear life. It was so much fun though. I've never been thrown back in the seat like that before. 300 hp and all wheel drive is amazing. Too bad it's $35K.

AWD on a sport compact doesn't mean you can take it off-roading. Those thin tires aren't going to get much of anywhere in the snow. My friend thought his EVO 8 was a rally car just b/c it's AWD; when it snowed this winter, the MP5 did better than the EVO. Unless you have a 4X4 truck, front-wheel drive in a small car will work out better... But a WRX will do one hell of a drift.
