Gas Mileage

I checked my mileage today after filling up all the way and comparing it to the miles after the last fill, and I came up with quite an ugly number....just under 17mpg.
I understand that there is room for error with the fill, and it's winter so the car wastes gas in the morning heating up and probably more than usual while driving. But isn't that number very low?! I'm not that rough a driver even.
:\

PS: it's an automatic by the way... reading in the search the numbers are lower than most but not that far down
i just want to make sure it's not TOO unusual
nothing to go to the mechanic about

That does sound a little lower than it should be. Besides the other factors you've mentioned, if you've got your vents set on windshield, bi-level or floor, this turns on the A/C regardless of whether you turned on the A/C switch, so that would affect your fuel economy as well.

I have an '02 ES auto, and get around 25 or 26 MPG city with A/C, 28 or 29 city/freeway combined without A/C, and around 32 on freeway roadtrips (A/C 50% of the time). I'm a certified leadfoot too, so it's possible to get better than those numbers.

Since winter started I have been getting around 26-27 mpg. In the summer, I was getting around 28-29. My average is 28mpg over 7184 miles.

I've been keeping an eye on this too. No matter how I drive, it get's ~22-24 mpg mixed city/highway (back and forth to work, running errands, etc.)

I'm right around 3800 miles, Automatic trans., K&N drop-in filter, and RB catback exhaust. I've also had the VTCS soleniod vaccum hoses pluged for quite some time now, too (this makes all the difference in the world in cold start engine noise, so it's not going back to stock anytime soon!)

Not real happy with fuel economy, but at least it's regular unleaded gas. I do use the A/C compressor quite a bit with window defrosting (it's been in the single digits here for weeks now.)

Hopefully things will improve with time, and warmer weather.

Edit: Forgot to add Sparkco plug wires (FWIW.)

I have a 02 protege es manual and I have calculated my tank 4 times since I bought It. get the best mileage with 89 octane 29.5 mpg, 27 with 91 octane, and about 29 with 87. I drive on the freeway about 80% of the time at 70 - 80 mph, but the southern California traffic kills me sometimes and I could probably get even better than that.

What do you think accounts for your substantially higher gas mileage?
