How can "oil is oil"? There are different formulations, and those ARE backed up with scientific data (viscosity, decomposition rate, temperature operation range, minerals and impurities)! So are they all the same? No! If oil is oil, then I suppose I could pour in crude oil, or transmission oil, or WD-40, or gasoline, hell why not put in diesel? They're all in the petroleum group! Oil is oil right? Riiight.
Think of it as vodka is always vodka-some cost more, some less, but they all are gonna give headache in the morning.
Screw the scientific data, which is marketing BS-study it and select your oil according to it. I will grab 4 liter jug with my eyes closed of the shelf and have same results and same engine life as "scientifically backed" oil data user.
Don't be ****, do I need to list all API labels for "oil is oil" phrase?

Back in the olden days of the Protege (1991), Mazda recommended an oil change at 600 miles. I guess they don't now.
I did one according to the recommendation and it didn't appear to hurt the car yet, ten years down and counting.

Today some manufacturers (e.g. BMW) ship their new cars with Mobil 1 and recommend the first oil change after 15,000 miles or a year. This seems long to me, even for a synthetic. I feel guilty even with Mobil 1, after 7500 miles. On the other hand Mazda, for some reason, recommended against using full synthetics in the first generation Miata.
It appears that manufacturers have a diversity of opinions about oil and that these opinions change over time.

How will you be a conformist when the manual recommends every 5,000 in 'harsh' conditions or 7,500 under mild conditions?
