Well last night I finally got my 17" rims on. WOW...what a difference it makes to the appearance of the car. People who were telling me that you feel every bump in the road weren't kidding. It will take some time to get used to I guess. Nevertheless, I am very happy with how they make the car look. I need a digital camera to post you guys some pics. The clear corners and rims that I put on make the car look entirely different.

When people put on their 17's did you notice anything different while driving at 100 km/h? I have noticed a slight shaking of the steering wheel at higher speeds...nothing major, but enough to notice it. The wheels are balanced and everything, so maybe it could be my wheel alignment? Or is that how the car should feel with the new rims?

 

Yeah, I have 18's on my Maxima and it rides like **** compared to the stock 15's or 16's. The 16's and 40 series toyos on my civic are not that bad but I won't go lower than a 50 series on any of my cars again unless they come with them.

 

I am thinking that maybe I need a wheel alignment. That would probably stop the shaking at 100 km/h???

 

I had 17 inch rims and 45-series tires on my last car, a 2001 Dodge Neon. The grip was incredible, but the ride was so bad that I told myself I would never do it again. In Michigan, we have frost heaves and severe pot holes that are known to bend these kinds of wheels and they do. Despite driving carefully between the potholes as if I was in a minefield, I did manage to bang one of the rims badly enough to cause a rim leak. Besides, with so little sidewall, the balancing has to be spot-on. I took the car back no less than three times to get it rebalanced within 1000 miles of buying the rims. A slight imbalance around town would quickly become a knuckle-shaking experience at 80mph on the freeway. Finally, I found that with such a short sidewall, there is less communication coming from the tires at the limits of adhesion. Perhaps this is why racers run with a taller sidewall? Pick up the next issue of Grass Roots Motorsports, and count the number of light weight 15" and 16" wheels.

Is it any wonder that I've kept the stock polished wheels on my lowered P5, and dumped the money otherwise spent on wheels underneath the hood instead?
