Scanning manuals has been done before. Yes it's legal if you include enough user agreements.

Go to http://manualcd.dsm.org . That guy spent two weeks of solid scanning and produced this cd. It includes ALL of the DSM Manuals from 90-99.

Alllllright. I'm totally going to try and get one for myself .. if the weather's good next week I'll bring my car in and ask them about ordering it. (toronto/canada).

Hyundai has a website with all their technical repair details for their cars which is quite nice because it's free but doesn't help much if you're out working in the garage unless you have a laptop and wireless lan

I wouldnt say it's legal. Over on the ZX-12 board they posted the manual for the ZX-12 on a guys web site for everybody to copy.Kawasaki found out and said to take it down.Even the web site somebody posted here says you must have a hard copy.Somebody could scan it and burn copys and send them to people, we could give them 5 bucks for it.It wouldnt be legal but how would Mazda know.Thats how they do it on the ZX-12 board now.

It IS legal as long as you have your OWN hardcopy of the manual. If you don't have that copy then yes it is not legal.

That's what the user agreement on that page is about. You have to agree that you have a hardcopy and you're only going to use the parts of the disc that you have a copy of. If you break that agreement, then it's your problem, not the person who provided the disc.

Tell that to the judge presiding over the Napster case and the RIAA
Although she's taking another look at the misuse of copyright so maybe there's still a chance for individual responsibility.
