engine match ups

i plan on selling the 92 pro this december and going after a 3rd gen, 99 onwards, most likely a used one, however im confused on engines here. I believe that all 2002 and 2003 trim levels of the protege came w/ the 2l dohc rated @130 something. but im not sure about the engines for the trim levels on the earlier 99/00/01 years. If anyone can let me know or point me to some info it would b great. I just dont want to get stuck with a 1.6l.

1999 and 2000 Proteges came with either the slower 1.6L engine or the 1.8L one rated at 122hp. Surprisingly, the 1.8L Proteges are just as quick as the 2.0 L ones. In 2001 they kept the 1.6L (don't get this one) but the ES models came with the 2.0L one. If you bought the LX model in 2001 you either got the 1.6L or if the decals on the side say 'LX 2.0' then obviously you have the 2L engine.

Just pop the hood open and check because we all know how deceiving decals can be

Also in future, USE THE FAQ!!! Read the forum rules as it tells you to search the FAQ first (Frequently Asked Questions) as this is definetely right there when you open the FAQ.
