emergency brake light turns on during quick braking

My car is an '02 ES auto with just under 40K km's. I've noticed lately that during a quick brake (not necessarily a hard brake where the ABS would kick in) the emergency brake light will turn on. Why would this happen? The brakes are the originals. They still seem responsive and there is no noticible noise when braking, if it wasn't for this light I would think the brakes are fine (and perhaps there's no connection?). Thoughts?

Check the brake fluid, and how much meat is left on the pads.
When the pads get down to the end of their life, it takes more fluid for them to contact the rotor. Your ECU reads the low fluid level and the brake light comes on. If the fluid's low and you have no leak, chances are it's time for a set of pads soon.

If you add fluid now, you may have too much when you install new pads.
