Custom Turbo =o

Alright, I am not exactly the smartest when it comes to cars, I know some basics and somehow know more than pretty much all the people in my school (which is very sad), anyway I bought an IHI RHB5 turbo from a friend...my protege is a 2002 with an auto tranny. I think I got a bit in over my head, anybody know what I should probably do to make my car ready for a custom turbo kit, which I will have made probably in the summer. Thanks for the help lol.

this is a very broad topic. You got a nice sized turbo but what condition is it in? Does it need rebuilding? Can you fabricate your own manifold? Do you have a flange that will allow that turbo to bolt onto a manifold you'd need? What do you plan on using to control the fuel system and ecu?

in all honesty every other post after mine is either going to say the same thing or not help you.....

"you'd probably be better off to buy a reliable and proven kit from someone else since you don't have the skills, tools, materials needed to do a decent job yourself."

This isn't a jab at you....building your own custom FI set-up isn't as easy as changing your spark plugs.

I know its not going to be easy, I have a few connections here and there to help out, its not a huge turbo, its very clean teh wheel spins freely and it has about 3000 miles on it. It does not need to be rebuilt. from what I understand its a pretty typical turbo used in 4 cylinders for not an engine killing amount of power. I will be getting the turbo manifold custom made, it does have an internal wastegate, i found a nice intercoolr I'll be getting and I will probably get a tial BOV. I was just wondering if you have any idea what kind of build up might be necessary if any, and what may be necessary for my auto tranny.

that looks like about the size of a T3....anychance you could get me a compressor map so I can see how much air it moves? This will determine your approximate SAFE boostlevel.

On similar IHI turbo's used by HiBoost they recommend 6psi for automatic cars.

I would HIGHLY suggest a fresh tranny flush/ new filter and using premium tranny fluid with a nice air to air tranny cooler. Keep that fluid clean and cool and it'll last much longer.

Ill start looking for any and all specs i can get for the turbo, I was thinking of buying the torque converter off http://www.lentechautomatics.com/ if you think that would help durability wise etc.

I don't think it would help durability much at all....in fact it may huirt it. If I'm not mistaken the torque converter isn't a problem on the automatics it's the bands and valve bodies and what-not (tranny's not my forte).

I would think by adding a heavier duty t.c. you'd be adding more stress to the tranny. Maybe one of the guru's will pop in and help out.

specs etc. I had been researching any info on my turbo for a while before i began this thread and learned that hte RHF series is the replacement of the RHB5 series of turbos, the RHF5 should be almost identical to the specs of hte RHB5 heres all teh scmeatics, compressor maps, etc that i could find.

hmm, a little bigger than I thought. looks like a decent turbo though. That compressor map is kinda cluttered so it's hard for me to read but it looks like it's maximum boost pressure is about 2.8bar that would = 41ish psi......doesn't seem right to me. Either I'm reading the specs wrong or that turbo is a lot bigger than it appears.

i dunno, i got these specs, etc. off their website ihi-turbo.com there actual japanese website doesnt have any real information on their turbos, just the website owned by their american joint company. If its that powerful then i guess i got mroe than my moneys worth, and these turbos are used in maseratis, and i forgot all the other companies, i had an entire list. This turbo is like 1 step down from the IHI VF series used in the wrx sti.
