Warrenty doesn't really concern me too much.

Thanks to everyeone for the help, it is much appreciated. I emailed FlyinMiata and lucky me, one of the locations they can do the install for a turbo system at, is out in spring branch, not too far from here. So, I do believe I'm gonna get hooked up with a turbo system. Rock!

If anybody else has any ideas for other stuff, please let me know, I'm always looking for more. I assume the next thing I would need is an exhaust to accomadate the turbo?

You should have taken your $4,000 and gotten a faster car in the first place if all you care about is power. Make that $5,000, because if "all you care about is power" then you wouldn't have gotten an automatic tranny. For the $5,000 difference, there are LOTS of cars with more power and more potential for power.

By the way, didn't you guys see the article (SCC maybe) where they took this guys riced out, 17-second nissan sentra and turned it into a 14 second car for $0? Who says that stripping down a car doesn't make a difference!

What I meant by caring about power, is that I'm looking for mods to add power.. just clarifying what I was looking for, as in saying I don't want cosmetic mods.

The reason I didn't get a more powerful car? This one is by far the most fun to drive of all the ones I tested.. and as an added bonus, fit my price range at the time I needed to buy the car.

The reason for automatic instead of standard? Quite simple.. I don't like driving a manual all the time. My car serves multiple uses, not just speed and racing. I saw the sport shift as a happy medium.

A huge thanks to all of those who tried to help me out. If anybody has any more suggestions, not just comments about how I should buy another car, please post them. Thanks again.

That's fine. I would recommend against turbo on an automatic Protege as Mazda auto trannys won't last very long with the added power. The warranty will concern you when you have to replace your transmission 10,000 miles down the road.

Well I would have thought the same person who mentioned the SCC article about that guys SE-R that they destroyed would have seen the srticle for the racing P5's. They were not done with their work and had the engine at 225 whp normally aspirated. 225 N/A HP in a p5 is an enormous amount of power in a little car.

With about 4 grand if you shop around you can get just about everything you would want for performance enhancements to your car.

You can either go with a full turbo kit which normally includes some bolt on, FMIC the turbo/wastegate and other small items.

If you go part by part you have to decide the application you want first. Like where your power band starts and ends, turbo lag/boost, and so on. Start with bolt ons like intake system, 4-2-1 headers, exhaust system (making sure the tubing size matches throughout for correct air flow. Intake and exhaust jspec cams, new intake manifold, lightened flywheel.
At about this point you'll want to get a stand alone AFC as piggyback systems dont tend to work well.

Then start looking at a FMIC and turbo as well as all the small things to make the engine able to handle the extra pressure from the turbo.

this seems like an extreme waste of money though. If he has plans to turbo his car then almost every bolt on you mention would have to be replaced for the turbo. Now that's alot of money to spend twice....

headers: $300-400
turbo manifold: $400-700
cat back exhaust: $300-600
turbo-back exhaust: $500-1000
intake: $30-100 (usually can't reuse intake in a turbo setup)

the cams may be able to stay but to get all the other parts would have to be bought.

I didn't say that they couldn't make a lot of power. I said that the Tranny won't last very long. They have to constantly rebuild the Trannys on the racing p5s. Besides, 225hp n/a in our cars would be VERY not streetable and VERY not smog legal.
