Check Engine Lights On and Off ??

Hi guys, I am new to the board. I was forced by my 01Protege LX check engine light problem to search for some possible answers for the following: Since three weeks ago, the check engine light has been on (for about a couple of days) and off (for also about a coupld of days). This sequence keeps repeating.

I was driving one evening, all of a sudden the check engine light went on. I checked the oil cap, it was good, gas was not low at all. I thought (as the manual suggests) there might be some electrical problem. Just as when I was about to call Mazda and schedule a check-up one morning, the light went off (I mean, it did not turn on after I fried up the engine). Then after a couple of days of no-problem driving, the light suddenly came on again. Ever since then, the lights has been going on and off in days intervals.

Does anyone has similar experience? My car is still under warranty and I will eventually have the time the next weekend to go to a local Mazda dealer for fixing. Yet, I want to know ahead of time and see if there is more I should know about.

Thanks.

When your CEL comes on how long does it stay on for?

My CEL kept coming on for about 5 seconds and very distant intervals, usually when the car was being worked harder (going up hills and harder driving). It ended up that my MAF was dirty and sometimes getting the data that was out of the normal range, thus making the CEL come on. I have since cleaned my MAF and the problem has disappeared.

i would say make sure your gas cap is nice and tight. or go to pep boys, and get a free diagnosis.

hello 2001protegelx, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

Seems to me you need to take your car back to the dealer....there is probably a faulty sensor of some sort....

Welcome to ther club 2001ProtegeLX.

I had that same exact problem for like almost 3 months. I took it to the dealership 3 weeks ago. They said that I had like 6 different codes going through my ECU. They also told me that if it goes off again to come back ASAP. Well today it came on again today for like 10mins, so I'm going straight to the dealer tomorrow morning. Maybe you should do the same.

Yeah, I was gonna say, the error code ought to be stored in history, so even if the light is not on currently they should be able to tell what caused it to go on. So you shouldn't need to worry about when to schedule the appointment. Otherwise

And welcome to the club. Pardon the dust. I hope the technical problems get resolved soon

Waranty cash cow! Ride it until that cow drops to the ground, then ride it some more , just for the fun of it!!

Errors will be stored in the computer and def. Tighten the Gas cap a couple extra clicks each time you fill up. Also try to gass up completely from empty to full at another brand gas station, as it could be bad gas.

Easiest thing to do is to ride that waranty cow and get it scanned at your dealer if under 80000kms still! Good luck, and let us know of your results as we need feedback to GET LEARNED!
