You could get two or three different grills on some car. The Camaro was one of them. Head light covers and no covers were on the same year car. The 67 and 68 are very close in look and I would have to look very close to tell them apart. The 69 had different sheet metal. This is a 69.
OK, time to kill the Camaro thread once and for all.

Yes, that is a '69 with the RS package, therefore it has headlight covers. That's what I said. Maybe my captions for the pictures are confusing.

Here's the complete run-down of 1st-gen Camaro exterior changes, to kill this once and for all.

1967 non-RS: Flatter grill. Turn signals next to exposed headlights. No side markers in fenders. Small triangular vent windows next to windshield.
1967 RS: Solid black plastic headlight covers. Square turn signals under ends of front bumper. (Gold car in second post).

1968, all models: Headlights and grill are the same as '67. Small square reflective side markers added to front and rear fenders. Fresh air ventilation system added and triangular vent windows deleted. (Maroon car in second post is a non-RS 1968.)

1969 non-RS: Set-back V-shaped grill and "frogeye" headlights. Round turn signals added underneath front bumper. New 2-piece taillight design. Rear wheelwell openings squared off. Slightly more creased, squared-off fenders. (Orange car in original post.)
1969 RS: Same bodywork changes as non-RS. Partially see-through headlight covers. (Yellow car in second post.)

And yes the stock WRX tires aren't the greatest in the world, mainly because they're all season performance tires and not High Performance tires like the Dunlops or RE040's. The RE040 are supposed to be quite a bit better than the Dunlop SP9000's or at least that's what you'd gather by looking at the price difference. 215/40 17 for the RE040's are $211 and the SP9000 in the same size are $134, so who know's.

Glad to see they're not putting those crap tires on the MS.

Thumbs up

Ok, I've been lurking here for a while trying to read up on the MS Protege. I don't currently own a Protege, but I used to have an MX-3 GS. I loved the way it handled even compared to some newer, more expensive small, sporty cars. I did drive a P5 earlier this year and thought it was great. The handling was excellent and the driver feedback and sounds were great.

Anyway, I'm almost positive I'll be buying a MS Protege come September (or whenever my local dealer gets them.) I'm hoping that the price is ~$21k including destination. I want a car that will be fun to drive on a daily basis, that I can also autocross on the weekends as well as attend some driving schools (I've been to 2 at Watkins Glen, one in my MX-3 and one in a rented race-prepared 318ti.) I also seriously considered the WRX when it came out, and drove one around the same time I drove the P5. I think the MS Protege appeals more to me since it's a factory "tuner car". I'm hoping since it already has upgraded suspension, engine, etc. I can keep the modding bug at bay (at least until the warranty's up, I suppose.)

Provided I do get the MS, it will be my first new car. That alone makes me a little hesitant. Although I've had plenty of cars (too many? nah...) I never bought one new nor have I ever had a car payment. I guess I've had about 8 cars, a '74 914, '92 MX-3 some air-cooled VWs and a few Volvos along with my current '96 Tercel. I'll be glad to get back into something a little exciting.

I think I'm pretty cheap when it comes to cars, but that gives me some money to tinker with them. With the amount of specialty parts on the MS Protege (and the MP3, for that matter) it appeals to me as a great deal for the price, and should be a blast to drive as well.

Jason

P.S. Just noticed this on Edmunds. Guess the Mazdaspeed floormats weren't ready yet...

Well, I just recieved my first issue of Sport Compact Car, it has a review on the MS Protege. I havent read it yet, but I will post their comments later. One thing for sure, this magazine is a Ricers dream! LOL In the ads in the back of the mag, there is some kind of device that will make a turbo sound when you reach a certain RPM...

Good lord, could you post that turbo sound thing in any more threads? This is the third one I've read that you put that in. I belive it's been discussed before, at least the 'electronic blowoff valves' were.

FYI - I just read that an MR2 Turbo owner is making 300 WHP on the GT25 ball bearing turbo at 20psi. This unit has to be absolutely laughing at the 6.9 psi it is running in the MS.

I don't see how the turbo is goin to last at all. Are you sure it's a T25 and not a T28? I thought the maximum safe boost on a T25 was around 15-17psi, after that you run the risk of tearing up the internals like the turbine, bearings, bushings, etc.
