Can anyone answer this question?

Hi, Im the very proud owner of a 2002 Mazda Protege5 that I absolutely adore! Ive noticed one small thing about it though that bothered me a little bit.

When I do 65mph on the interstate, the tachometer goes up to 2800rpms (I have an automatic). Is this normal for a P5? A mechanic told me that I should probably get my transmission checked but I wanted another opinion.

I hope you guys have some insight. Thanks!

what do you mean "it goes up"....does it jump or just cruise at 2800rpms? The proteges have tall final drive gears so it'll turn a higher rpm than other imports.

Cool. Thanks guys! That probably saved me a few bucks in a transmission check.

It sounds about right. When I'm doing 70mph on the highway I'm at 3000rpms every time. I also drive an auto.

if you are nervous about your tranny (which you should be since this is a ford derivative tranny) depending on where you are, transmission fluid exchanges (not complete flush) is beneficial every 12-15K miles or once a year. but yes, your revs should be about that high because of the gearing. going 75 puts you almost at 3500rpms.
