2003 Protege Sedan ES, 2.0, Manual, only mod is Injen CAI.

I don't have a problem with stalling at a stoplight, but when I start the pro up after a night, or a long spell, the idle is a bit high. 1600 rpm or so. really not a big deal, but if I go WOT immediately it bogs down and almost stalls. Even after waiting a minute or so this still happens. If I rev slowly there is no problem, and it goes away completely after a few minutes of actual driving.

The engine isn't designed to run WOT after a cold start. It is designed to run at it's operating temp. and that takes a few mins to acheive. By reving the engine to WOT right after a cold start you are putting enourmous stress on smaller parts in the engine that expand much faster than larger pieces. The reason you are stalling is that many of the parts in your car just don't fit well at startup. You are definatelly ruining your engine.

Also keep in mind that the engine is supposed to rev high on startup to reach this operating temp. 1600 is about normal for a warm start (prolly ambient temps > 70 degrees). If you start the car in say 30 degrees, the idle can grow up to 2200-2400.

Please be more careful with your car if you want to let it last 100,000 miles or more.

2002.5 MP5 - I have the same problem. My dealer said that it was because when the fan comes on (radiator), it bogs the engine for a second, then the engine pops back up to 750rpm. He said its normal. I only notice it at stop lights, but it makes sense that your radiator fan would turn on when you're sitting at a stop light on a hot road in Southern California.

On the other hand, our fans are electric, and the pull from the fan shouldn't be enough to effect the idle. What mods have people done to their cars? Is anyone having this issue on a bone stock car?

Year: 2002.5
Type: MP5
Trim:
Engine: 2.0L
Tranny: Manual
mods: none besides 18" ICW Racing wheels (tensions) and some Hotglow Neons.

I'm going to take my car back to the dealer within 2 days I want to see what they tell me. I had this problem with my Honda and they changed my alternator. But lets see what Mazda says....Probably more BULLSHIT!!!

does the P5 have problems when idling, i.e., do they stall often by themselves? is this a very common issue?

2001 ES 2.0 sedan
Injen CAI
manual

only does it some times....never until recently though....

do you guys leave your AC switch on over night? i have noticed that the rpm drop seems to happen less if i just have the windows open and no AC...which makes sense since it blows harder the faster i go....problem is still there, just not as severe if it doesnt startup AC immediatly

i thought it was my airfilter as well.....NOPE

note: i dont remember EVER having this issue before the CAI tho...

Question

Think it might be the idle control solenoid sticking?

I don't remember it before the CAI either. However, I still have the problem even with it taken off. Perhaps I should reset the computer and see if it goes away.

Me: 2002 Protege ES Sedan (9000k)

I haven't had a problem with the car stalling or idling really low. Probably because I live in MN and it doesn't get terribly warm here but I have noticed excess fan action.

One problem I had in the past when I first bought the car was cold engine rattle noise. When I would start the car during the day, you would hear a super loud *** rattling noise that came from underneith the car. You can sometimes hear the rattling noise too when you shut the door, like something's loose. But after awhile the noise went away and I don't hear it anymore. My friends think its because something loose fell off and its not vibrating anymore hahaha... well it must not be important because my car still works well.

The only major complaint i have is the bad body, it dents and chips really easily. How much do you all think it will cost to get a brand new paintjob of a different color (a good paintjob)?

~Peace
