We had some low temperatures (-30 C) this weekend and I saw something I've never seen before. While the usual cold stuff was there ie: clutch stiff, hard to shift, my cruise control wouldn't work till about 1/2 hour of driving at highway speeds. Has anyone else seen this and if so why does it happen?

I thought the cruise control was an electronic procedure. If that's the case why would the cold affect it?

BTW this is the worst car I have ever owned in terms of not liking the cold. Obviously not made in Canada

It doesn't get quite that cold here...my only complaint is that they forgot to put the seat heaters in (I have leather seats).

 

Hi, I own a 1999 protege LX and as you, I live in Canada, Montreal suburb. Last winter, my first with my pro (bought used), I had problem with my cruise control on hwy. I just didn't want to work until like 30km done. Also, got problems shifting when the car is cold. I will change my tranny oil with castrol syntec at my next tune-up, it should help.

 

I feel that the car drives smoother when I let it warm up for 2-3 minutes after starting, or when the temp gauge has been sitting in the "usual" position for a while after warm up. Pain in the ***!

 

in the morning i usually go outside start my car then i go back in and eat breakfeast and when i go back outside its warm (temp gauge in middle)

 

Yup, I do the same thing, I let engine run until rpm reaches below 1.

Me too! It's a great feeling getting into a warm car when it's -30 outside... it's a s**ty feeling filling up after 320 city kms... Yep, just this morning, I couldn't believe it when I looked at the trip meter... I (almost) hate winter!! If it wasn't for hockey, I'd live in Florida!

 

Yeah......i'm realizing that this car is not a winter car as well..... all i have to compare this car to is my old 626 and that car would start no matter what temperature ( i would never plugged it in )....but this car, i plug it in all the time or it labours to start.

 

It takes a couple of extra turn overs to get going but hasn't not started for me yet. -36 celsius this morning but I used the Shadow to go to work and its a much better winter car than the P5. So far the only glitch was when trying to unlock all the doors it wouldn't work for the front passenger door, all the others opened. Electric bug I guess. I usually let the cars run for about 10 minutes in the winter so that the windows are clear and the inside is warm.
