General rule of thumb is 600 miles / 1,000km minimum for engine break-in for a non-hand assembled engine...anything else is just stupid.

I generally fill at 300 miles. In the '99 that was about 11 gallons (about 27 - 28 mpg). In the '03 it was just over 12 gallons so mileage was just under 25. Same type of driving. I just hit the 400 mile mark.

Sorry. To clarify, I filled the '03 at 300 miles. I've gone another 100 since and hit 400 today.

What would make you an expert on this topic?
You just called me stupid, so you must have some serious expertise in this matter. Considering the amount of experience I have you must be a huge authority on this to be calling me stupid.

SaskPro, why is it that you have 'expertise' in this? Just wanted to know, not hating or anything.
In any case, to break-in the car, try and vary the RPMs like other people said for the first 1,000 kms and after the first 1,000kms take your car for it's first oil change as stated in the manual.
Always warm up your car as you normally would anyways before revving the hell out of it, etc.
Good luck and welcome to the board.

actaully there is no such thing as break in periods. In fact your are not very smart to baby it, you can have a prob and not know it since you are babying it. you want to gas and go on anything new, IF THE MOTOR IS GOIN TO BLOW OR HAVE A PROBLEM THATS WHEN IT WILL DO IT. In the bike world that is our logic also, works great. 02 gixxer 750, 2 miles on the bike. 8K rpm motor blows, get another one 02 gixxer 4 miles on it, same thing didnt blow, first was bad, BUT good thing i blew it under warr and not wait until im fooked. a motor is desinged to be used it doesnt need a freekin thumb to suck on give me a break. every day since day one, i even peeled it out of the lot, its been great, turbo is coming soon and i cant wait to floor that bitch every day every turn every light. god bless america.

I used to do all the machine work on the engine blocks, rods, crank, ..etc for the number one performance shop in town. Learnt from the guy I consider the most brilliant engine builder in western Canada. He now works at a high performance shop in Red Deer, Alberta building funny car engines. I've been racing cars at the local track for 18 years. Along with my own cars I've helped many friends and acquaintances make there cars go very fast.
I have also owned several brand new cars over the years including a 91 5.0L Mustang and 96 Trans Am. Also raced my non performance cars at the track too. ALL my cars were ALWAYS a little faster in stock trim than every body elses. So along with believing in the hard break in theaory and having it taught to me by the best I have also proven this theory many times over.
I was just trying to help. I could careless if anyone follows my advice. I'll be the guy at the track with the fast car if you need me.

<<Yeah, right. But RTFM, which says for the first 600/1000 mi/km, vary the engine speed. That's it, nothing else. Nothing about pussyfooting, babying or mollycoddling. I redlined my ES several times (three?) during late break-in, ran through the gears continually as often as possible. I think she liked it. I sure did.>>
haha RTFM.
