I did a search and found a few posts about bike racks on the P5, but I have a sedan. Anybody have any experience with the Thule or other racks on the sedans? I'm interested in a roof mount, not a hitch or trunk mount.

I've got a Thule rack that I've had for a while, it is a very secure, very non-invasive setup. I haven't yet bought the fit kit for my Mazda, but I expect it to work as flawlessly as on my past Toyota's, Honda's, and VW's.

 

Yaks are the ****! I loaded up 2 canoes and a couple of mountainbikes on the Yakima rig on my old Explorer for a vacation in Colorado a few years ago. Over 3500 miles on high speed interstates, twisty mountain passes and unimproved dirt trails and the loads stayed rock solid. The only drawbacks are the cost and the wind noise at highway speeds from round cross bars. I'm sure Thule is good stuff but I don't know anyone who has one to compare to.

If the price is too steep, check the various biking and paddling groups for used equipment - Yakimas are just about indestructable.

 

Most bike shops I've been to carry either the Yakima or the Thule systems, but usually not both. These two brands seem to be very popular, so you'll probably be fine with either one. Both systems look comparable to me, and seem to use similar methods of attaching to the car. I went with Thule simply because that's what my local bike shop carries. These racks are not cheap though, especially not the first time you purchase stuff, because you have to buy it all. But the Thule stuff at least is very solid and should last a good long time. I've had my rack for 3 years, my mom has had hers for 10, and it doesn't show any wear. I really like the fact that you can just buy a different fit kit and put it on almost any car, without having to buy new bars and bike mounts, etc. Kind of preserves your investment. Anyway, hope that answers some questions for you, enjoy.

I had a Thule rack on my Golf, but I left it on there when I sold it...Stupid, stupid, stupid...I should check for used gear. Thanks for the tip.
