Hi,

Has anyone out there had a problem with their battery boiling over? I found stains in the garage and when I opened the hood found out that the battery has boiled over and there is corrosion on many/most parts below it. Several bolts are corroded and there is some paint missing, also there is evidence of acid on some of the rubber lines.

I'll be in at the dealer first thing in the morning, I was going to be heading on a week long trip out of state, but I think this will postpone that. I have the OEM battery, 22,000 mi.

Any suggestions on how to deal with the dealer?

You shouldn't need to "deal" with the dealer. This is a glaring mistake. Also I believe the factory batteries have an unlimited mileage 3yr warranty on them. I would demand the car be inspected tit-to-toe and then be detailed to remove any battery acid. Battery Acid will totally destroy your engine bay.

Demand stuff until you're satisfied!

YA MAKEM REPAINT IT

 

Well, I took it to the local dealer and they checked the charging syste, it checked out ok. They replaced the battery on warranty, the service guy told me that the mechanics had cleaned up the acid, but after arriving home and letting the car sit for about an hour I could see the acid corossion starting again. It seems that they just squirted it with water. I mixed up some baking soda and water and proceded to squirt it everywhere I saw corrosion in the engine compartment. The acid is finally neutralized, but there is rust especially on the motor mount and where the motor mount connects into the frame rail just under the battery box. I asked the service guy about future problems when I picked up the car, he said the service mgr. was out to lunch at the time and I would need to ask him which I will do when I get home from vacation. Hopefully he will cooperate and they will repair the damage.

Be in their FACE!

The only oppty to get it right is NOW. Have them replace the engine mount and any rusted/corroded parts. Show them the leak!

I was able to stop by the dealer today. The service mgr. took a look at it and confirmed with the service writer that the original battery was in the car and said they would send it over to the body shop to have the paint repaired. I'll be with out the car for a few days, they even said they would give me a loaner. If they come through with what they have said this will be the best experience that I have had with a dealer (keeping my fingers crossed that I didn't just jinx myself:-))

 

We haven't had any problems with our battery yet, but at first sign of decay we're putting in an Optima. They are just the best battery out there.
Totally sealed(alright, there _is_ one pinhole for emergency venting) and they hold a charge incredibly well. I had one in a car for 7mos. sitting in a garage, and it cranked the engine over many times(coil wires off to move some oil and gas around) then fired the engine up without hesitation. This may be an issue with warranty, but definitely worth investigation as an option.

Otherwise, make SURE that they neutralize _ALL_ the acid in your engine bay before painting the thing or you'll be back in a few months doing it again. . .

 

I work at Advance Auto and people dont believe me when i tell them how much better the optima is! Only problem ive had with them is 1 out of 5 may come back dead, but after being recharged, no more problems, i got a shop that took out the side of one, and its STILL works, just kinda unsafe. I have one in my ranger, and if i get the MSP i want, its going in there
