APC Lights
Too easy, but if your not sure don't do it yourself. there is a small chance of breaking something. Ask a mazda service shop to help, some will do it for free because their curious about the lights. Good luck!

If you haven't been told already...
Run a bead of "clear latex based silicone" around the lamp to seal the clear plastic to the chrome or carbon fibre look part. This will stop the lamps from leaking or fogging up (especially if you are obsesive compulsive about cleaning your car like me
)
To do this take some masking tape and run it along the edge in case you slop some around. I found the silicone in the toothpaste like container is easier than using a caulking gun. If you do get a fingerprint or slop some around you can use water to clean it off before it dries. Let sit overnight inside (garage or porch).
I did it with my lights and they are as clear as new.

APC tails for the P5? how much are they? where did you get them from? 
Anyway, installing those things are easy. No harder than what you need to do to change the light bulbs in the tail lights if they burn out.
If you look at the inside of the hatch area (towards the lights), there are 3 plastic round covers (i think only 2 on the right side -- the side with the jack). Anyway, pop open those round covers and you should see a bolt inside, well actually it's a nut. Remove 3 of those and you should be able to yank the tail lights off (it's on pretty tight).
Once you have the tail lights out, take out the bulbs and put them in your new APC tail lights. Tighten all the nuts and u're done!
BUT be careful not to drop a nut in there while doing this. U'll never be able to find it (don't ask how i know!)
Good luck and do post some pictures when you're done!

He has a 2002.5 ES Protege. Not a 2000 Protege 5. They have not come out with lights for the P5 yet.
Never looked at the lights of a sedan version so not sure if the info you provided will help him on the install but since the sedan lights are not the same as the P5 lights I doubt it would be the same.

Oops. nevermind then. I knew that APC didn't make one for the P5s. Just thought that I wasn't "up to date" :P
Anyway, I'm still pretty sure that's the way to install the tail lights. I did it in my previous Civic (yeah, i know...). There are a few screws or nuts holding the lights against the body.

The APC lights do fog due to air leaks.
Removing the assembly:
remove plastic screw holders-pull inside first, then outside
pull pack plastic and look for three nuts
remove the three nuts and wallah
pull out the assembly and match up the bulbs
*This would be the time to change the yellow turn signal to another color bulb if you wanted.
Put back assembly by backtracking taking them off
