Anyone else having problems with stock tires???

I don't know...maybe its just me....but my tires don't seem to have all that great traction. My car slides very easily when its raining or when the roads are wet, and it has happened once before on dry roads...
I commute a half an hour to school, over mountains, and if it is my tires, I wanna get new ones before something bad happens.

If you guys could give me any feedback, I would appreciate it.

well, if your tires are really troublesome, i say change it, to be on the safe side. we don't want any deaths now.

We have the Bridgestone RE92's they're not too great of a tire. Fairly good in the dry but really sucky in the rain or snow. I can really push it in the dry w/o feeling any sliding, but rain or snow they're all over the place. Tirerack rates these tires fairly low so going with a new tire (especially snow tires) may be a good idea, that or just slowing down and accepting that are cars, though quite nimple, aren't porches or vettes!

The dunlops are ok, they are all season. They cut performance for snow/wet handling and they cut snow/wet handling for performance. At best its a mediocre tire. Get what i'm say'n?

Yeah, I'm sliding a bit here and there and I don't think I'm pushing the car hard enough to be doing that. At this point I'm trying to wear my tires down ASAP so I can get an upgrade.

But u have to admit that the dry performance is kick @ss!

Amazing grip!!!

And the fact is there's no one tire that's great for dry/wet/snow/ice at the same time.

I would just go light on the gas pedal a bit more when conditions are not that good. Of course, when the time comes for new tires, i won't get these again, but they're ok for the time being.

Not to be difficult, but we really need some more info. on your driving before we can assess whether you have a tire problem. How many miles do you have on your car, what kind of driver are you, etc.

As far a decent all-seasons I would rate the Dunlops quite highly. I agree with douggie in that they really hold on in dry weather.

But as P5 do or die pointed out, they are a compromise. If your looking for something specific (eg. wet weather, winter tires, performance, etc.) maybe you'd do better to replace them and keep them as backups.

See that is the thing...

You guys are all saying, slow down....but I don't drive bad in the rain, cuz I know how my car handles. It pretty much slides on just about every turn. I guess just getting some new tires for the winter would be a good idea.

P5Gurl:

How about tire pressure? what r u running at? Sometimes too low pressures will increase the chances of hydroplaning

And do you drive an auto or stick?

I hotfoot it with the best of them and I have not noticed any problems with sliding. I have been able to BREAK the car a little loose in the rain but have never had a problem with unwanted traction loss. I would say they are pretty good tires for stock.

Last time I checked my tire pressure, which was not too long ago, it was where it should have been. And I drive an auto.

Maybe try 2-3 PSI higher and see if you feel any difference.

well I'll say get new tires to be on the safe side

because you don't want to come up with the same problem as I did

It was pretty wet and i was making a turn, and the car just slid straight up onto the curb, lukily i hadn't lowered the pro yet, but the two front tires burst (stock tires) I was stuck for about 5 hours at a gas station, first thinking what i should do cuz i didn't want my parents to know, but they found out neway, i was even willing to shell out money for 2 new tires from a 24/7 autoshop

so I say change the tires b4 you come into trouble like that

this happened about a month 1 - 1.5 months ago so about 3 years on the stock tires

Maybe it's different in Canada, but the stock tires on the 99 LX in the U.S. are Firestone Potenzas, and they SUCK. The common nickname for them is "poortenza". They're awful tires and if this is what you had, then I'm not surprised.

The Dunlops that are stock on the P5 are much, much better tires than the Potenzas--it's not even close. As with other folks, I haven't had any problems on the stock tires, even in the rain, and it's been raining a lot here lately...

I have had my P5 for less than a week so far, but I have definitely noticed some slipping from the tires. Maybe it's because they are so new, but often when accelerating from a standstill the tires will spin a little before gripping. It happens much more often when it's accelerating on a turn (merging onto a road from a stop sign), so maybe it's just the front-wheel drive that I'm not used to (my other car is a 5-speed with RWD.) Still, I'm pretty easy on the clutch so I wouldn't expect the tires to spin so easily on dry pavement.

That brings me to something else...has anyone found a good deal on a wheel/tire set for the winter? I'm thinking about getting a set of steel wheels to protect my alloys for the winter, clad with some nice Blizzaks or the like. Tirerack isn't advertising much in the way of winter tires yet, so I couldn't find a package that would fit the Protege5.

Any thoughts?

Oops...just saw this thread that answered my questions. Thanks, winter drivers...
