Cover story for this months Motor Trend is a Focus RS8 vs. Lambo Gallardo. For those not in "the know" the RS8 is a freak of a focus powered by a 500hp V8--driving the rear wheels I believe...
Anyway, Ford is establishing platform sharing with almost all of it's subsidiaries... do you call them subsidiaries? I'm speaking of Jag, Volvo and Mazda.
Jag has been platform sharing for years, the X and S-types both are based on Ford chassis', the Mondeo for the X and the LS for the S. The base S runs a modified Duratec 6, I believe.
Volvo is the most recent to share development costs. Only the new S40 is based on the new Focus/Mazda3 platform, Volvo supplies all the powertrains though.
As for the Ford/Mazda relationship, nothing new really. Ford and Mazda have shared costs for years. The escort, the probe/mx6, various engine and trans pieces. The Protege was developed and manufactured solely by Mazda (although a Ford rebadge of the Protege exists overseas as the Puma). The Mazda3 is based on the euro Focus platform but the engine(s) is a Mazda piece that will also see duty in both the euro and U.S. focus--as well as the Ford futura (no longer to be named futura cuz of Pep Boys). Actually the Mazda 4 bangers--the 2.0, 2.3 and yet unseen 1.8--will power all base Fords.
Incidently the Ford [futura] and Lincoln Zephyr will both be based on the Mazda 6... which also runs a reworked Duratec 6... LOL.
Hardware sharing such as this is just another way of getting more money from spending less...
