About to buy a P5, need help...

Hello-
My wife and I are about to buy her a White P5. I am an avid Nissan Sentra SE-R fan---I have a classic SE-R--1993. However, this P5 is something else. Anyway, help me buy it....

I am after the White with the black leather, hole in the roof (moonroof) and the polished wheels. If you throw in an auto tranny---wife driving the car, remember?---and the tax, advertising fee, destination charge and sales tax, you will come up with $18,965 as an invoice. My company gives me the "X-Plan" through Ford so my pricing is something below invoice. I don't know what the "something" is yet as I haven't been to the dealer yet---god I love the internet to research. Anyway, on a Miata you get $300 less than the Invoice. I have to bet that since the Miata is a bit more popular that you don't get as much off. I am hoping for $500 below Invoice for the P5, but I don't know.

What have you guys paid for the car I described above? Do you think that my pricing---$300 below that Invloice number---is good?

Thanks for your input!

That sounds pretty good to me. I got a 2002 P5, black, standard wheels, no moonroof or anything else in a 5 speed. Only options where the alarm and wheel locks. paid around $16,100 for it after the Mazda Rebate and taxes, tags...etc. The one you described has many moor options and will be pretty cheap after your mark down.

Rebate?

What type of Maxda rebate did you get? I was told there was nothing other than the 0% financing.

Thanks!

There was an incentive that actually just ended beginning of July. It was $750 off. Add to that the $500 grad rebate, and we got $1250 off our deal of $100 over invoice!

The $750 I found out about at Edmunds.com, but it looks like there's nothing now.... Sorry, man

hmmm

Well there is still a $750 rebate---I just got back from the dealer. I get the X-Plan through Ford at work which is the S plan with Mazda. I ended up getting mine for $300 under invoice. Now the $tealer tells me he can't find a white, auto, sunroof and polished wheels with leather in 5 states. He said he can find the cloth just fine. However, I really want the leather. Any suggestions here? I can't go 03' or I lose the financing option. I hate $tealers sometimes.

Thanks,

Sounds ok to me, but if you are going to pay that dealership an advertising fee then I question their ethics. That is a crock if I ever heard one. What else are they gouging you for? I would suggest that you check another dealer.

Leather is still pretty rare around here. I looked at about 20 Protege5's before I bought mine and only one had leather. I also saw only one white one.

Tell them they either have to look harder or go somewhere else. On Mazda's website you can use the dealer locator to find a car with the options you like. That's what I did.

S-Plan

shumax,

You should not be charged any other fees under the S-Plan. You can call Mazda and get a brochure faxed to you! (you can call 1-800-555-1212 for Mazda North America's toll free number).

The Plan for me was only a few $$ under invoice, but on top of that I got the $750 rebate. ASK to see the invoice -- you are allowed to -- it has the S-Plan price printed on it.

I got a 2002.5 Silver Prot5 with ABS/Side bags, moonroof, and mats (all else stock, including 5-spd) for $16198. Tax was 6%, registration etc. another $135, and $32.40 for dealer business license tax.

Advertising fee sounds suspicious -- the plan specifically says the dealer is NOT allowed to charge any sort of "documentation" or similar administrative fee. On the downside, S-plan prices are non-negotiable, but anyway gets you a good deal.

If you get a better deal without the S-Plan, you can take that!

Good Luck,
Jeff
3-month old Prot-5, silver!

I agree with the suggestion to use the web inventories. You can find your own car. I know we all think dealers are full of crap, but when I was looking for a Blue car with ABS I checked inventories all over and there weren't any within a reasonable distance of Houston at that particular time. Sometimes they really DON'T have the car you want at a specific moment. Especially with leather cause it's a new option. Most P5 buyers still think "economy car" and leather's not going to be a huge seller I don't think.

Alternatively...buy a car that's available in your area with all other options and go to Katzkin.com and get aftermarket leather. Probably nicer anyway.

Definately can be tough to find a relatively low volume car like the P5 equiped how you want. When I was shopping I wanted a base yellow or silver with only the moonroof. Couldn't find one within 500 miles. Decided red would be ok, and found one 300 miles away. So I had the dealer get that one for me.

After checking out the Honda EX, VW GLS , the decision was clear....
I picked up my P5 with the following options last Sunday:
sport auto (honey hates manual)
leather
polished wheels
6cd changer
mats
rear bumper guard (plastic trim)
color - red

You definitely have to shop around....

Check the local papers for dealer specials, and call every dealer once you know exactly
what you want.

checkout edmunds.com

I think the hardest part was finding the P5 w/the options you want.

Lastly, don't believe them when they say they can't go under invoice...the truth is out there.

I hope my first post is helpful,
manny

woooooahb

Ok help me out here. I about bought the car tonight. The dealer took $250 that he will give back in order to find the car. Basically security that I am interested. Anyway, the car I am looking at is this:

White, Leather, Polished wheels, sunroof, mats and the auto tranny with the gay tip-tronic shifting. The S-plan price was $17,988. With tax, title, and his "DOC" and prep fee I was at $19,217. My tax rate is 6.25% and the title fee was $20. He was charging a $50 DOC fee and a $60 prep fee. Should I tell him to stick those up his rear? I hate paying someone $50 to do paperwork and another $60 to detail my car. But if you all think that's acceptable, then maybe I am being too ****?!

I need to know by tomorrow morning if this is acceptable. If not, I am going to need to know what is in order to smack him around a bit

"his "DOC" and prep fee " --

DO NOT PAY EITHER FEE.

The S-Plan CLEARLY PROHIBITS (in writing) the dealer from charging doc and administrative fees. I can e-mail you the S-Plan in PDF format. Read the last page and the last few pages. I can't believe he is charging a fee for washing the car! When I bought mine, the Mazda check-off list indicated I was entitled to a clean car with a full tank of gas. I guarantee if you call Mazda, they will be very mad at the dealer for this fee.

2nd: Make sure he shows you the S-Plan price on the invoice. It should be close to invoice price. Verify by getting on edmunds and kbb.com to get the invoice price for you car and options.

If you e-mail me at js24642@hotmail.com, I will e-mail you the plan.

Good luck.

-Jeff

EDIT:
P.s. the price seems OK, Base invoice is $15734.00 (with destination). Auto is $810 invoice, polished wheels are $400 invoice, sunroof is $560 invoice, leather is $392 invoice, mats are $64. Total is $17960 INVOICE, which is very close to S-Plan price you mentioned.

Edit2:
DON'T FORGET: In ADDITION to the S-Plan price, you get any incentives being offered. So you should get $750 cash back if you choose that option off of the $17988. I guess financing is in lieu of cash back, I'm not sure if you can get both.

Edit 3: The plan says (p. 5 of the fax):
"The dealership may not charge separately for document preparation or other administrative services incidental in the delivery of the vehicle. These expenses are to be considered part of the dealer's normal cost of doing business for which the dealership is compensated by the commission paid."

(p.7 of the fax):
"My dealer insists on charging a 'documentation fee.' Is this allowed?. No. Fees for document preparation or similar administrative services are not allowed."
