Holy, I leave the clubhouse for a while and this ( ) is what I come back to?

Anyways, I have read through the whole thread and one thing I have to say is that my '99 1.8L is diagnosed with slight idle-rich condition ( I spoke to the dealer service manager because of a rotten egg smell at stop lights). <<Jus-4-thought >>
The other thing I would like to add is that the OBD2 cars basically monitor themselves, so unless something was not working properly (a sensor or PLC programming), the root of the issue could be something else and the problem you are having is just simptoms.

NOW, before you start bitching me out...
When was your last complete comprehensive tune-up? (this is the first thing I check with any issues!)
Have you had the idle set/checked vs. what Mazda suggests?

EDIT--> I just got a speeding ticket today! 106k in an 80k jone, dropped to 95k

I am purely speculating at this point.
Reason is:
The 1.8L was actually a debored 2.0L 626 engine.
The 626 does not have this problem.
Nor does the ES with 2.0L have this problem.
I can see a pattern here. If you don't better get yourself tested.

My conclusoin: It was a problem with their engg design of 1.8L.(end quote)

If you think that has anything to do with engine design.....better get your own self tested. You may be the only person in the world who has owned a engine that will break down mechanically over and over again requireing no repair. And we know thats not gonna happen. Its electrical, probably ignition. But hey! If youre gonna dispute eveyone elses valid points and suggestions.........Dont ask.

Here's what YOU said:

You SAID it "would be better" WHILE in gear with the foot on the brakes... this indicates MORE engine load and the "problem" would be reduced... like I said, this clearly contridicts your statement of the engine being too "weak"... I understand what you had said PERECTLY FINE.

Would be better => jerk/jolt would be felt better.

AND PLEASE DONT CONSIDER YOURSELF A GENIUS.
THE 1.8L 1999 Protege ES DOES HAVE THIS PROBLEM.
THIS PROBLEM IS NOT UNIQUE TO MY CAR.

And thanks for correcting me on bebored/destroked point. All I know is that this engine was designed SPECIALLY for the Protege ES.

I put the same facts before Mazda and they understood right away what I was talking about. The discussion ended with me getting a 7 year / 100,00 mile warranty on my 1999 ES, since they could not fix the problem EASILY.

How about that?

Did you never take it in under warranty?

whew, fast response. Since you now have a 7-year warranty can't you get them to richen the fuel mixture for you?

edit: You wouldn't happen to be pushing the gas pedal at the same time as the brake would you? Just trying to be thorough...

you seem to be confusing an engineer with a mechanic.
Mechanics are the ones who know the nitty gritty, not engineers.

WOW! youre an engineer and spent all that time and money going to school just so you could say that the 1.8 has a problem. HOLY ****! So, if I loose 5lbs per wheel, how much rotational mass has been lost at 80MPH as seen by the car?

Well, they cant.
I figured some real genius over here would be able to help me out.

looks like I overestimated this crowd for their technical prowess.

I guess you missed my question:

Would you happen to be pushing the gas pedal at the same time as the brake pedal at a stoplight?

I'm trying to be helpful man
