02 P5 Factory Radio problem

I didn't see this topic covered elswhere on the site. If I missed it, someone let me know where it is.

Every once in a while, (I've noticed it three times in 500 miles) the radio jumps down a frequency. IE: from 103.3 to 103.1, for no apparent reason. The car only has about 500 miles on it so far.

Has anyone else had this problem, or have any idea what the problem is?

Hmm, weird, I've never seen mine do this.

This might be a misadjustment of the PLL (Phase Lock Loop) in the tuner of the radio. The radio searches for the best signal and locks on that strong signal. You need to go to the dealer and get the factory deck replaced.

try to get them to give you the $500 the factory deck costs towards a better head unit. I had a friend do something like this with his eclipse.

Run a test on your radio then. Here's how to do it (for 2001+ only):

-Making sure keys is in the position which allows the radio to be turned on, press and hold the power button.
-While still holding the power button, press and hold the clock and AM button for at least 2 seconds
-You should now be in diagnostic mode. What you should see in the LCD is a set of numbers at the top left of the screen (it's in smaller text; this is normally used for the CD changer disc indicator). On the big, normal portion of the display you should either see "no Err" or a trouble code. Write down both the small set of numbers and the trouble code if you do get it (post it here so I can look it up).

Now to obtain a signal strength meter for the radio, exit out diagnostic mode by cycling the key off and back to accessory mode.
-Turn the system back on and make sure it is in radio mode. Now hold down the power button and press the station preset #2 button for about a second.
-You should now get a signal strength meter. If its a full bar, you're ok. If it's half bar, the signal is weak (try a different station to see what happens; one of those very popular "easy listening" stations which gets lots of funding for crazy output power will be a good test). If you get less than half bar, there is either too much LOS or your antenna system is fubar.
Uhmmmm. For future reference LOS = Line of Sight. Refers to the transmitting antenna's pattern. A better use would be out of the transmitting stations LOS. But a better way to reference that would just be to say that he is out of the effective range of the station (since radio stations could either use one omnidirectional or multiple directional antennas for 360 degree coverage). Still. That is a cool trick.
