Cool Valve cover

I really like the valve cover that derrick showed us here (on the forum). I talked to the dealship today and they told me there are two: the MP3 and the Protege covers. What is the difference and can Protege5 owners get one? How do they fit and which one? Anyone know?????

Boy you are quick . I saw that post too. I think the MP3 has two valve covers, one is the real one and the other is a dress up one. I like the dress up one so I called my dealer and he said he can get it and is $129 CDN. I get a bit off of that though. The only think now is to figure out if it fits on top of the valve cover for the P5. Sure seems to from the cover I looked at in Red Deer.

The MP3 valve cover has mounting point for the engine cover which no other Protege's have. That's why they have an MP3 valve cover and a regular Protege cover. I would assume the valve covers would be inter-changable since both 2 liters are basically the same.

you are correct....the part you saw that derrick DRESSED UP, is a plastic cover that is there just to dress up the engine compartment.....and it attaches directly to the REAL valve cover on the engine via some special attachement points that are cast into the valve cover, drilled and taped.

YES the two REAL valve covers are interchangeable....and thus you could get one...change them out...and obtain one of those covers for your P-5 or standard 2.0 Protege if you had the want and desire.

What Nuke said is true, but when I worked at Mazda, even with my employee discount the two covers (new metal cover with holes and the plastic one) the cost came to about $500 CAD!!! However, these were not MP3 covers. The JDM Protege (Astina, Sport 20, what have you) comes with the black plastic cover standard, but instead of the MP3 logo, features a chrome "Flying M." These are the one's you'd probably be looking for.

Okay so I got the drawing back from my parts guy and he indicated on the drawing that the part number for the "real" valve cover for the MP3 is not the same as the P5 valve cover. So I am guessing that they are not the same.

I went and had a look at my valve cover and sure enough, there are mounting points missing where the "dress up" valve cover would attach. Curse you Mazda!!! You could have given me the mounting points and left them empty. You have other holes already there doing nothing, seesh .

So anyone know where I can buy a used MP3 valve cover?

Wonder how much that is? About $350 CDN as Max posted since I know the plastic one is $129 CDN?

I'm to lazy to run outside and look, but can we just drill and tap the bosses where the MP3 has the studs?

Doesn't look like as where you are drilling is into the top of the valve cover so not much meat there. Plus I would think that is the last thing I want to do to add a dress up part. I think doing that would void my warranty .
