Well, I dont have any experience doing it myself, but I have read about it. Your going to need a really good tuner and some serious dyno time for them to create the fuel and ignition maps. Sounds like BIG bucks for a street car... Is it possible that you could use the FS-ZE ECU from the car it cam out of?

I went to a tuning session for AEM new engine management system. The AEM guy said they're working on a stand alone for the protege. AEM's system comes loaded with a fuel map and ignition to get the car running. They stricktly warned that you need a person who has lots of experience tuning cars, and knows what thier doing.

They tuned a civic with a freshly bolted on turbo system while we watched. I didn't stay for the final runs but the stuff I sae was impressive.

It's plug and play. Using connectors that are identical to stock parts. (ie no wire cutting and hacking)

AEM's website dosn't list it but you might want to check out the features they have.

That would require me to change out my wireing harnesses. Lots of down time, and big bucks.

Hey heres an idea, if you decide not to go the turbo route, go with weber side-draft carbs! That would really be cool... and no electronics to worry about, well you could use an electromotive ignition...

Hey linux i just installed a Haltech E6K programmable ecu on my p5. I also have an FS-ZE but i have 11.9.1 pistons its actually a FS-DE I just changed the cams and pistons. Basically the same motor now except for the valve springs and intake manifold. Just to let you know i spanked a 2000 SI last week by a car length and my Ecu has not yet been properly tuned. Made a big difference in all around performance im very happy with it. Got my redline set at around 7200 but i dont want to go higher untill every thing else has been mapped out . Im trying to get some dyno runs within the next week to get it at max performance. Ill post some numbers then you can decide. I paid 800$ wich is cheap i got it for a very good deal. surprised it only took a few hours to install. The longest part is tuning it rite. I like it, so far so good its up to you to decide whats best for you though. PEACE OUT BOOSTEDMP5

I can tell you from a lot of experience that the E6K is the way to go for any type of custom setup. When I first threw it on it was very simple to install and tune. I took it to the dyno and ran a baseline from my street tuning; 179whp, 180lb-ft @10psi. To date the car has put down 225whp & 265lb-ft of torque at 14psi. There is very little left in the turbo but the numbers prove what engine management can do for you.

The ease of programming is the best thing about the system. Once you read the manual a few times you'll begin to understand how complex yet simple everything is! Feel free to contact me if you'd like to get a system for your car.

Question

What if your car just has a few mods. I have an intake, and will be replacing the exhaust system as well. Could I also benefit from the E6K, or is it not worth it until I modify my car more. I was also looking at the Apexi super AFC, as another tuning option. Not sure if it is worth it or not.

You will notice large gains in the upper RPM area where the stock VAF limits airflow. You may be able to extract another 20-25hp from the engine with good tuning. And probably a little bit of torque as well. If you plan on going further with the car then the Haltech will benefit you in the long run as well.

It will also benefit anything you ever change on the engine.

Pros and Cons

I need the pros and cons to getting the Haltech.

I need info on how the car will:

*Idle
*Start

I also need info on what this will mean for emissions.

The guy at Rotary Performance recomended against getting one.

Thanks to all!

We have emissions testing here in CA.... Doesn't mean the car won't pass, there are always ways around the system.

My car idles perfectly, A/F Ratio of 14.7:1 idling at 950rpm with 450cc injectors running Sequential injection.

When I turn the key on the fuel pump primes and then I crank the motor and it fires right up and warms up on high idle till 104F then warms up normal from there.

If you are concerned about the OBD-II testing then run both ECU's in the car. You can pickup the pieces of the harness you need to wire into the haltech from the junkyard so you can maintain your stock harness and when test time comes just unplug the haltech harness and plug in your stock pieces. Not difficult at all.

Linuxninja,

Have you called corksport lately? They have an ECU for the FS-ZE swapped cars that SHOULD be tested sometime this week. You may want to hold off on the Haltech until this ECU is tested.

Yeah, I called them I think on Wednesday. When I called they still were waiting for the word from PowerChip. That's great news though that they finally are to the testing phase. Time to make this a reality!
