Shortened Injen CAI

Ok, i did a search, found nothing. What I am looking to do is shorten a injen intake that I will be buying from a friend for my p5. I want to make it where the filter goes right over the hole that the intake would normally go into. I live in a very flooding prone area and do not want to run the risk of hydro-locking my engine. I know the air won't be as cold there (later i am planning to make a casing that closes it off from the rest of the engine bay), but if it keeps my car running, i am fine with it. Someone else on the board told me that someone did this and posted pics of it. I was wondering if whoever posted those pics could repost them and tell me the depth of what they had to do. Was it just cutting the pipe? Any help would be appreciated.

I cut my Injen to make it shorter for a while, here's some pics. I'm back to the regular length now...I just bought another rubber sleeve and some clamps to connect them back together.

Now it looks like this:

Why would you want to shorten it? What about the AEM short intake? Just curious, but any difference in hp Negatize?

Thanks negatize, only thing is what motor do you have? Cause the 2.0l intake i am getting is two pieces. Did you have any vibration problems with it not being supported on the filter end. Also how did it affect the performance? any info you can give me would be helpful.

I have a K&N filter and built a cold air chamber.

If you decide to make it shorter, you can still passe a dryer hose in the hole to bring more air near the filter.

to get an idea and maybe a few others:

It is not the prettiest, but after you put the metallic cover, it looks allright.

I have the ZM DE 1.6 liter...AEM doesn't make a short ram for this engine.

The reason I cut it was because at the time, I was driving my car through huge puddles almost every other week and I didn't want to hydrolock my engine.

There was pretty much no difference either way...intakes for our cars don't do much besides make noise...cold air or not.

Well you would be surprised. I noticed a difference when I am revving around 5K-6K and on the highway. But who knows..It was not a blind test vs placebo ;-)

click here to see dyno testing on a Ford Probe GT with opened K&N filter or CAI

But I agree, few people will feel a difference of 3-5HP. If you do feel like your car runs faster in winter or at night, you surely can feel this difference (this effect is real and is caused by the car getting colder air)

no offense, not tryin' to start a flame or whatever, but it's the ugliest air intake i ever seen. but it's cool you trying to save some money doing it your own way.

oh don't worry, being pretty was not the goal but rather getting the coldest air possible. And it worked as you can see with my temperature measurements. 15C difference is dramatic. This was on a 30C summer day.

If you have limited funds you have a choice of looking good or going fast. I say going fast is looking good. :-)

Eh? Truthfully I would have sent back my $250 ingen CAI and told them to shove it up their tailpipe if all it did was made noise. Fortunately, It did a VERY noticeable difference and I'm very happy with it. I even noticed a small difference between the short ram intake I had before the CAI.

Negatize...just wondering why you left that black plastic piece of the stock intake in your engine bay?

I have the 1.6 liter which isn't too responsive to mods, there could be a 1-2hp increase but unless I put it on a dyno I wouldn't be able to tell.

I put the black plastic piece back in because I figured it would route some air into the engine bay. Plus it fills up the huge empty space right above the exhaust manifold..

if u want to see an effect, change the muffler. the sum of the muffler plus the intake is greater than the sum of each taken individually.

Might it just be easier to remove the black stock piece to allow for better flow/cooling? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do anything, but on my car I like looking down at everything

I agree with you it is smart. I wanted to do this but my K&N filter was in the way.
