short shift question

i've heard negative feedback on the b&m shifter and the only other shifter for the '02 pro5 i've seen is the srmotorsports which is $169. anyone know of any other shifters or have experience with the sr? i don't know anyone that has one and i don't want to drop money on the sr not knowing about it.

i have the pacesetter and i dont like it. It is VERY notchy and not smooth at all. It's difficult to disengage gears and unless you are making WOT high-rpm shifts it has no advantage over a stock shifter.

I'm just going to send a few feelers out for a stock mazdaspeed shifter. I enjoyed my msp shifter very much.

I have an OBX short shifter in my pro, I believe it would fit a P5. It costed me around $70 on ebay. It shortened the shifter and reduced the throw a little. It isn't as smooth shifting as the stock one and it is very notchie very time i throw it in third. Just as roddimus said "unless you are making WOT high-rpm shifts it has no advantage over a stock shifter."

my MSP brothers and sisters can vouch for how well the stock msp shifter is. I plan on just spending the money to do it right.

when you cut the shifter down with a hack saw, you dont shorten the shift, to shorten the shift you must relocate the pivot point....

I just installed a TWM SS about a week ago. It's awsome.

well well....I may have another option then. One of the things I loved about my stock msp and p5 shifter was how smooth it shifted gears. One of our local p5 guys has a short shifter when mine was stock and I could get in and out of gear much faster than him becuase of how notchy it is. I think I'm now suffering the same fate. Is the TWM shifter just as smooth as stock or is still notchy?

MP3 shifter...much shorter up top and slighly shorter throw than stock...smooth as silk though and can't beat OEM...I'm with Matty on this one

I agree. I replaced my sedan shifter with the MP3 shifter and ****. It's~one inch shorter above the fulcrum point than the sedan shifter so your hand moves through a smaller arc when shifting. Coupled with the Kartboy shifter bushings and Red Line MT-90 synthetic gear oil, the set-up has less play and a smoother, more precision feel when shifting.

Incidently the MP3 and The MSP shifters are the same dimensionally, only the threads for the ***** are different. MP3 has M8 x 1.25 thread while MSP has M10 x 1.25 thread.

Using either the MP3 or MSP levers avoids the stiff, notchy feel and excess synchro wear characteristic of short shifters.

IMO, the TWM is about 99% as smooth as stock, when going through the gates (I don't run MT90 yet, nor the stock shifter **** - the one I have is more similar to the OEM p5's) . I also notice that my shifts are slightly smoother than before, when letting off the clutch. It just takes a tiny bit more force to put it into gear, but like I said in my previous topic, it's nothing really.

Downsides -- Getting out of reverse sucks. Kinda hard not to put it into 5th.

All of what I just said, with the exception of the reverse part, will happen so as long as you don't overtighten the nut that fastens the shifter to the rod.....TWM don't specify a torque figure.

Overall, the car is much more enjoyable to drive now.....

Ask Topher for his opinion. He also has the TWM SS.
