question for all

Has anyone had their throttle bodies ported and polished from Gude Peformance? Im thinking about getting it done and was just curious to find out how it worked out? Are the Bullfrog/Stinger kits any good? Is it worth the 1700 dollars it cost? Give me your thoughts please.

Someone recently posted some dyno sheets after installing a t/b and adjustable cam gears, and he experienced a mild horsepower increase, although I don't know of anyone who has proven that a bored-out t/b increases power all by itself. Also, Gude didn't do the work.

What kits are those?

www.gude.com

Gude makes "Stinger" Head packages for ZX2s and ZX3s, but I don't believe they are doing anything for the Proteges...someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Im not saying that the Stinger kit will work for my car, but when the guy from Gude Performance e-mailed me back today, he sent to me a price sheet and it had the prices for both the Bullfrog and Stinger kit.

On my application sheet he sent to me, it says the Bullfrog and Stinger kit are.....

A. PORTED POLISHED HEAD WITH RACING VALVE GRIND AND HIGH COMPRESSION CHAMBERS . B. BIG BORE THROTTLE BODIE.
C. BULLFROG / STINGER RACE CAMS. D. FLOW PORTED INTAKE MANIFOLD. E. RE-PROGRAMED COMPUTER.F.VALVE SPRINGS

Touchy ****...

We don't have a Escort or focus's head, so if he says that the parts are interchangeable he is taking you for a ride...I am not clear on what all was in the email...Did they say they could do the work and have the cams and valve springs for a FS?

Any porting and polishing can be bad overall if not done correctly so i would say no it is not worth the money unless you are only interested in NA. Also the gains will not be incredible. Plus I have heard that the Pro's ECU is next to impossible to crack...

The only things that are in the kit for a Protege are letters A-D. I would think that the Stinger kit would include all the parts and the Bullfrog kit is just the parts A-D. Im getting my Protege ECU upgraded by Jet Chips, so I wouldn't let Gude touch my car computer. Im not too sure about polishing and porting the cams. I just talked to him about getting my throttle body done. Im waiting for him to e-mail me back. I'll let you know what he says when I talk to him later.

JET has a shady reputation at best, so I wouldn't be too calm about letting them touch your ecu either. Most dyno's I have seen of JET tuned cars perform worse overall than before. You may see a slight spike of hp at a abnormal rev range, but overall it will probably suffer.

FWIW I believe they are reffering to the head for the polish and porting, not the cams...

So what is the best company that makes computer chip upgrades? I was looking into buying from Super Chips, but they stopped making chips for all imports. Who else makes a good ECU upgrade?

I don't believe there are any "chips" per say for the Protege, only stand alone. Look into Haltech's E6K or a TEC-II or TEC-III. They are much more expensive than a chip or piggy-back, but it's worth it in the long run.

I've been hearing good things about the Unichip. However, if I correctly understand how it works, it's not a simple "chip"; it's basically a semi-stand-alone system that works alongside the stock PCM at part throttle but overrides it at full throttle. It's easier and cheaper to install than a full-blown stand-alone system, but the installation is significantly more complex and expensive than a Jet or Superchips-style chip, and it requires dyno tuning to work properly.

What all goes into installing a stand alone system?

So where can I go to find one of these stand alone systems? How much more does it cost than a Jet or Super chip? The only reason I wanted a Jet chip was because I heard they do more than just increase the HP. I heard they also can be "upgraded" based on the modifcations made to the car. Can the stand alone system or Tec II or Tec III systems do that?

If Gude is willing to do the work then I say go for it. They have produced some very good gains on the ZX3 and ZX2. If you are serious about getting a gude head kit talk to the guys at http://www.phordracing.com. They are Gude dealers and can probably do two things for you
1. get you a better price than GUDE direct since Gude cannot undercut thier dealers.
2. Give you better customer service than GUDE direct.

Tell them Kevin Gregerson sent ya I don't make any money off of the deal the owners of the bussiness are friends of mine. I've got a Gude Throttle Body in my Zx2 it produced very nice gains above 5k. Besides you usually don't have to worry about the computer that much because you can do other things like pots to make up for the computer.

They also have a store location in Fresno if you want to talk to them personally.

Thanks a lot Kevin. I e-mailed your friends at the company and I'll wait for a response tomorrow. How much of a HP gain did you get when you installed your t/b? Do you know of any companies that make a chip or computer upgrade for the Protege? The only place I have seen is Jet chips. They upgrade the computer based on the modifications of the car.
