Okay people, shoot me down quick if this is a bad idea...

Alright, well the crazy car ideas keep flowing in my head... I need therapy or something... Anyway, how feasable would it be to do an engine swap to the FS-ZE engine and not kill my car? as I look at it now, I'd say that it'd be cheaper than going FI right now and would give me similar power gains...

Good idea, bad idea, ugly idea?... or should I shut up and still aim for a turbo kit?

you should talk to Linux Racer, he did this in his car and without the j-spec wiring harness or ecu you'll be barely above stock fs-de numbers.

It would be a better idea to buy some sort of forced induction or just build your motor for NA. If I remember correctly, Linux couldn't get the ZE to run well at all after thousands of dollars were sunk into it.

What about this?
If we could get the intake manifold and the ECU that they use, with the cams from Wagner (they say they'll add 26 whp)
and new rods and build one kick *** NA 2.0!!!!

Well I was looking on Corksport and they sell the FSZE cams, intake manafold, and pistons. I'd say that it could probably get you close to the actual j-spec numbers if you tune it right (new ECU). We already have a fairly nice block to work off of, so my other idea was to just modify my existing engine slightly, and hopefully not blow it up.

I guess my next question would be if I did get the J-Spec cams, intake and pistons, would it still be a good engine to try and go forced induction someday or would I be committing myself to a life of Natty-ness?

Green Day has a good quote for questioning your sanity in these times: "Oh therapy can you please fill the void? Am I retarted or am I just overjoyed?"

Karen has the J-spec cams and doesn't seem to be too impressed with them.

I would NOT get the pistons if you plan on going FI later...10.7:1 CR is NOT boost-friendly.

p.s. the MP3 intake manifold is the same as the J-spec....you could also modify your stock manifold by removing the VICS flaps...same thing.

for those interested I may be having my P5 (with haltech F10X) tuned NA also by a famous tuning guru Steve Kahn. I'll save this map so anyone who wants to go all motor with the haltech to control fuel can have a $400 tune at a MUCH better price!

I just got off the phone with Derrak at cork sport. He has the ECU for the japanes FS-ZE and said that in order to use it you'll have to buy a wireing harnes but it will work and would give you the advanced timeing for 500.00. How ever youd have to use the Japanes crank pulley and move a cam cencer. How hard would that be? With that said if you know some one that knows Mazdas this would be kick *** for a NA built car.

500.00 ECU and Harness
500.00 Cams
670.00 for the intake (ouch!)
I cant seem to find the rods anymore but I would think you would want to change these also. 500.00 + -
185.00 piston set
200.00 for the crank pulley
Damb this just keeps adding up!
Matty, how much for the SC?

The F10X is a Haltech stand alone fuel computer. Basically you eleiminate your ecu's control over the injectors and give it to the haltech. the wiring harness conatinas it's own sensors that read and monitor inputs to determine the best amount of fuel for that situation.

Basically I've seen an AEM-powered protege with a simple SIMPLE road tune make 14whp on 87 octane and no timing control. I would be willing to bet I could get at LEAST 20whp gain on 91-93 octane with nothing but adjusting the fuel curve. If you saw how horribly rich our cars run you'd understand why.... "the leaner, the meaner"

I've seen it!!!

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the J-spec cams give gains. Just not the gains that are 'claimed'. If I had to put them on the "STAGE" scale, I'd have to say they are STAGE 0.25 cams. Perhaps I need cam gears...but I'm just not interested in spending the $350 or whatever and getting them dyno-tuned...right now.

Matty, keep us up-to-date on the Haltech NA map.
