Newbie with catbacks...help!!

First of all, can someone explain to me what a catback is and how it works? If I spend money to buy one, how will it affect my car? My friend tells me they are only a few hundred and can add 10-15% bhp. This sounds too good to be true, so let me know please. Thanks for your time!

Too good to be true. With a cat back and a better intake and filter you'll see about 6-7 wheel HP on our cars. A cat back replaces everything from the second catalytic converter to the rear of the car hence the name; cat back. Usually it eliminates the resonator and replaces the muffler with a better flowing one. The tubing is larger than stock for better flow also.
