I just bought a P5 and was wondering how to boost horspower without killing my budget. i didnt buy mazdaspeed cuz its a sedan and i like the hatchback look of the p5 but the engine is only 130 hp. any suggestions? Thanx in advance.

If you search the fourms, I'm sure you will find what you are looking for. As for cheap HP, it doesn't exist with this car. Should have gotten a SRT-4 if that's all you wanted.

You got a stick? Otherwise forget it. Just do the intake / exhaust combo. Im very happy with my car. Never had a problem with it not being fast enough. I've had it up to 130.

if you wanna go fast.. be prepared to empty your wallet with this car. intake, exhaust, header, undersized pulley's, cams, standalone ecu, pistons and rods.. if you wanna stay N/A.. otherwise just get a turbo but even then you should definatly upgrade your rods. if you look around, lots of people are breaking rods by putting turbos on these cars.

<<<how to boost horspower without killing my budget>>>

go to ebay.com, search on "Protege 5" and get their cold air intake for $30-$40, and the far cheap exhaust you can get would have to be muffler... mazdaspeed sells their muffler for less than $200, i think....

Re: need cheap horspower.

what i would do is get an intake header and exhaust. this will get you about 20whp all together. after that you can go nitrous if it desire more power. going this route will aloow you to purchase parts one at a time . i dont have enough dough to throw down $3000 plus on a turbo kit as tempting as it may be. there is a guy on the other forum that is making an n/a kit for our car that will net about 60-80 extra hp. i hope that this helps.

hehe i broke a rod without going turbo hehe

but no cheap hp with these cars, as been stated above

I/H/E is ur best bet, for the cheapest hp, won't net you too much tho.... probably a little less than 20whp

how about new ignition wires and plugs and a grounding kit? Those should let you a few HP!

that should do the trick, but, how would you know if it helped or not?

you will need anyway... intake and exhaust work done.

get rid of the resonator and 1of the cats, that will cost you only a few bucks.

second, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator will help only when the ecu switches to Open Loop.

thanx to all who responded. unfortunately i got automatic. but thats cuz i live in jersey and every morning on the way to work im in bumper to bumper traffic for half hour to 45 minutes. then during work i do lots of driving also in a van so i wanted to make my travel to work as least uncomfortable as possible. im not looking to make my car do quartermile runs quick, im just wondering what can be done to get it a bit quicker. my old gen1 protege has more pick up from the start but on the highway this one seems a bit faster passing and accelerating. since i just got this car i dont wanna really do too much **** to it to loose the warranty. speaking of warranty, someone told me that i cant even install a aftermarket alarm system cuz it will void the warranty. anyone agree with that? so it looks like ill start with the hookups a bit later since i cant afford to loose the warranty now. so from what ive been reading i think the intake seems to be the most popular mod and relatively easy to do and removable incase i gotta go to the dealer. im also gonna stick with 87 octane gas. was reading a post and for the cost difference 91 wont do jack to boost mpg or hp. one more question for you p5 owners. is there anyplace i can get mud flaps custom made for the p5? i went to the dealer and this dude said that they dont make them for the p5. i wanna get them cuz i hate seeing the rocks fly off these 16 inch tires and messup the paint behind the tire under the door. ****, i got another question. whats the point of the foglights on this car when they shine like 6 feet infront of the car? i really dont wanna see potholes upclose i wanna see stuff further up the road.

yep 91octane will do nothing for power output, I even think 87 will get you better power output and mileage

no mod will void your warrantee unless it is specifically stated in your warranttee (like say they don't want you to switch out the chip) or your car breaks and the cause of the failure is directly related to an upgrade part(s). There is no way that installing an alarm will void your warrantee. Now if you install it and short out the ECU or fry some other electronics, then youre screwed. Just make sure you know what you are doing. Are you installing it yourself or having someone else do the install?

are you trying them when its dark out? during the day they look really dim but are infact shining the correct brightness

they arent meant to be bright, because then they wouldnt be fog lights!

its not the brightness that concerns me. its the angle they are at. they practicly shine 6 feet infront of the car. and ofcourse i tried them at night. i think im gonna have to put the car on ramps and make them shine level like the headlights maybe slightly lower cuz i dont wanna blind anyone infront. im just looking for a wide angle and not so much distance.
