NA Tuning

We've all been here long enough to know that the FS-DE is a pretty weak motor when it comes to NA tuning without gobs of money. What we've lacked is a cheap piggyback or standalone to tune it, as they're usually quite expensive and hardly available for the FS-DE. However, perfworks, on the other messageboard is almost done with a piggyback that can control fuel and timing and is under $700. He is also going to sell a larger throttle body, and different intake manifolds for forced induction or NA, and soon after a complete NA kit.

So we have the following available for a NA setup:

-AWR or RacingMazda header
-Many different intakes
-Cams, although custom is probably the best way to go
-Adjustable camgears
-HC Pistons
-Many different exhausts
-Throttle Body
-Intake manifold
-Piggyback

So what do some you people think is possible in gains with all or most of those parts and proper tuning, now that its available? I would be happy with 180hp at the crank on my MP3.

I am still on the fence about going with a turbo, but the thing that appeals to me about NA is the speed at which you can upgrade. I don't have to save up $3500 for a kit all at once plus another grand for various parts and for if things go wrong. With NA you can piece it all together as you can afford it.

So, just curious what you guys think is possible. Perfworks on the other board thinks his NA kit will be able to achieve at least 60 more HP at the crank. I think its a pretty bold claim, but he seems to know his stuff, especially with forced induction.

60!?!?

60 at the crank? I doubt it'll be that big of an improvement.

I think it is possible to get 60 to 80 HP. For starters the 93to96 probe has the fs motor which only has 110 HP. Our car has 130. Thats 20 hp difference but the down fall is our cars weigh more so it even outs the power.

To get to what I was saying. If you deck the head .080 that will raise the compression of our head to 10.5 to 1. If you also put the pistons in from mazdaspeed/jc pistons you will raise the ratio to 12.5 to 13 to 1 ratio. Get some regrind cams other then the slightly higher ones from mazdaspeed and you are easly talking about 50 HP there.

Get the AWR Header thats 10HP (60HP all Together)

Also adjustable cam gears.

If you can get 150to 160 at the wheels you will be a low 14 all motor car. Add a stand alone then you can lower that.

Our ECU will learn slightly from the mods you have done trust me.

I heard the same with the bp motor escort gt I had. I was running 13.8 @ 98 MPH All Motor. That was with stock computer.

Also alot of these can be done for under 2000 dollars.

Well, like I said, I'd be happy with 180HP for the MP3 right now. I think its possible to get close with intake, header, exhaust, custom cams/valve springs and camgears. Also, our ECU tends to run pig rich, so with the ~$650 piggyback that will be available shortly we can tune that and also do some stuff with the ignition timing. And if it still isn't close, then I'd think about the HC pistons in which case I'd go for head work while its ripped open anyway.

And then if I decide I'm unhappy, or it just doesn't cut it. I'll sell the parts, and have the piggyback for a turbo setup and get the maps from perfworks for the turbo setup.
