Let's talk internals...
There are a lot of threads in this forum about intakes, exhausts, etc...
Doesn't anyone out there have an awesome all-motor Mazda, with forged internals, a ported and polished head, lighter pistons, hot cams, etc etc etc?
There must be some cars out there with very serious engine mods. I want to hear about them. You can only go so far with bolt on performance...

very true.
Internals refer to crank, rods and pistons. From the factory the 1.8 and 2.0L blocks have a forged crankshaft. Rods and Pistons are different story, I think they are made from glass. There is a guy on another forum who claims to have a built motor costing over $6K. Since wagner sells a built shortblock for $2100 and Paeco full head service with custom cams is only $2500 I don't know where he spent the rest of his money. Also he won't produce any time slips because he says its made for driving not racing or something along those lines.
I personally was going to go NA with my car but I got a little deep into the supercharger project and it's too late for me to turn back now.
You should contact Sunbelt Performance in Georgia or Tripoint Engineering. They build the Protege Race cars you see on Speedvision and they make pretty decent power. Also, sunbelt does extrude hone porting and polishing so that might be something to have done if you're going to have any engine work done.

Cast rods and pistons perhaps? Are the J-spec parts forged?
Roddimus the moddimus, does the 1.8/2.0L head flow decently, or can it be made to?
BTW, do you know of anybody with adjustable cam sprockets that has fooled around with the valve timing on our cars?

love the name!
J-spec parts are non-forged to my knowledge...just upped compression on the pistons.
I hear the head flows pretty well and will NOT respond to gutting it. I personally am going to use Extrude Hone polishing as it's arguably the best form of porting and polishing since it so closely replicates air's actual travel paths.
I don't know of any cam gears. I think SRmotorsports has a set for like $400. They have to be custom made since our exhaust cam gear has 3 magnetic pickups for the cam sensor.

i'm to the point where i should put-up or shut-up. the only mods i have left are all those you listed...and don't forget a good engine-management system...i don't think the stock p5 ecu would go well with higher compression. if it were only a little cheaper!

Well, for all those looking to stay NA then a supercharger will only improve what you decide to do (other than raising compression).
Also, I'm going to see what I think about these haltech and I may look into becoming a distributor.

damn thats rediculous
as I said, over on the other forum there a FEW peeps doing some serious na work, namely "InstallShield" has been doing a full custom internals motor and has made some SERIOUS power out of it...

I HIGHLY doubt he's anywhere near 180whp unless he's running 11.1:1 CR and complete stand-alone EMS on 100octane or better. Last I talked to him his "performance cams" lost him power and he gained it back by gutting his intake.....I'm sure he's a great guy and all but without dyno's I'm going to have to search for my "bs flag"
