I asked this in a different thread but apparently noone checks that one out anymore. Hopefully someone can answer this.

I was looking through a magazine and saw the orange p5 with the paint that makes it look like a puzzle, APC made it. Anyways, the intake it had was interesting. I think it was a short RAM intake but what I wondered about was that it seemed to have a little mini intake sprouting from the side of the tube, near the throttle. As with the Injen CAI I think a red tube goes from the engine to the intake pipe from the same opening but this one had a little mini intake instead of a tube. What is the application of this little opening in the piping and what is the difference between the two setups?

Shawn, I think what you are describing is part of the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. That tube allows the vacuum from the intake to pull any blowby gas from the block back into the combustion chamber. What it sounds like this person has done is disable this system by disconnecting the hose and adding small air filters to the intake and the valve cover. This adds to the emissions the engine produces by venting a small amount of unburned fuel into the atmosphere. It is probably illegal in most states, and I don't really see the purpose as I don't think this adds any power.

Here's a Newbie question for you all. Is the splash guard for the Injen Intake going to take away from performance or the overall sound? Dont hate too hard

It shouldnt. Its not very restrictive. All it would do is keep some wind off of it if anything which may cause a small amount of change in the air flow. And I cant see it changing the sound. It is def. something to get if you have any rain. Its better to be safe than have your intake suck water into your engine blowing it up!!

I wonder if you could get the bypass valve that AEM sells and install it onto your Injen intake? I bet you could! For about 40bucks you could cut the pipe right above the hole in the fender and install it. I am a firm believer in the AEM bypass valve! I forget what month the artical was in but SCC did a review on it with an NSX, they put the car on a dyno and made a custom pipe to come out the side of the car for easy access to the filter and then they submerged the WHOLE filter in a tank of water! At high RPM's! The water went up the tube all the way untill it hit the bypass valve and then it would NOT go any futher! The guy that owned the car was like one of the magazine owners or an AEM sales rep. or something like that, I forget, but the whole thing was pretty impressive.

Yeah, 4 of the Injens I sold also had the bypass valves ordered up. I dont see a problem installing them on the Injen (didnt get an extra for me to test out yet but I plan on it) I am seriously considering selling all future Injen intakes with the bypass valve preinstalled. I dont think some people understand the seriousness of sucking water into their engine & they just dont want to spend the extra 40.00 or 50.00. Once i get the bypass valve in mine & see that it fits perfectly & is pretty easy to put on, I'll consider that (unless someone can convinve me they live in a desert than only gets rain once a year & they dont drive that day!) I'd rather not have someone mess up their car...know what I mean!

Well you can't force it on them, But i would strongly suggest the little bit of extra money now then alot of money later I know when I get my CAI...I WILL get the bypass.

I see. From the angle of the picture I could not tell what if any tubes where coming out of the PCV valve on the engine. I could see that on the intake pipe where the tubing from the PCV value would regularly go there was a small air filter. I wonder if they moved the PCV tube closer to the throttle and thus out of site, or if they just left it the valve open or sealed it off. What would happen if it was closed off?
Are you people familiar with something like what I am trying to describe? I've searched the net but still haven't found a picture describing what I saw. I don't really want to buy the magazine for the one article.
What I do know for sure (now that I've read the posts) is that on the intake piping, on what appeared to be where the PCV tube would usually be inserted, there was a little mushroom shaped filter. Maybe they put the PVC tube somewhere else on the intake body, I don't know.
