this may be a stupid question, but is there a way to change the point at which an automatic transmission will shift? say it shifts around 3000 and i would like it to shift at 4000 or 4500, is there a way to make it happen? thanks, and feel free to PM me

hehe...just step on it harder!

if you open more than 1/2 throttle, then the A/T will shift at around 4500...it will pull to 6000+ if you planted your foot down "hard!" at wide open throttle...

dont like the jackrabbit starts? get a modded computer chip that changes your A/T's shift pattern

donno if the Mazda's AT box has those adaptive gear box found similar on Mitsu's (INVEC-II)...if so, just drive your car hard for a while and the AT box should get used to 4500 shifts

where can i get such a chip? and where would i find out if the protege does in fact have those adaptive gears? does anyone else know?

I'm replying because I want the same thing - I'm used to driving a stick, and I would usually wind out the gears fairly high, even if I wasn't romping on it - just liked it that way. Now I'll get an email when responses come in .

I feel that the P5 auto shifts WAY too early during non-spirited acceleration - I'd love to raise the shift pattern 1000 RPM or so.

I posted this same question months ago - most of the responses were "drive harder" and "shift the auto yourself" - not what I was looking for.

Hope to hear some news on re-mapping the shift pattern somehow - being an electronicaly controlled auto, this should be able to be done. I don't think the P5's auto is "adaptable" though - I don't think it adapts to your driving "style" over time.

So whassup with this chip thang??

yeh...dont think our AT trannies are "adaptive"...that sux...cuz most new AT's are...even Hyundai's have adaptive AT box...

oh wellz...

as for the chip...I have no idea man...being an electronically controlled box...it is definately do-able...just donno where to get that kinda modded chips...I wonder if it's built in with the ECM...maybe JET is able to mod it or something...

if I want to wind the engine...I just slap it in 2nd gear...

Yeah, well, I'm not really trying to rev it out or anything, just raise the shift points a little bit for normal driving.

It is adaptable.

My transmission has changed to accomodate my driving patterns. It doesn't shift as early now. It's actually exactly what you are describing. I didn't want to put so much throttle down as it would shift to a lower gear too early. But it did change shift times.
